The budget entry point to BMW's first-generation Z4. The 2.0i arrived in 2005 as a cheaper alternative to the inline-six variants, using the N46B20 four-cylinder with 150 hp and a 6-speed manual gearbox. It shares the E85 platform's sharp styling and rear-wheel-drive handling but substitutes the characterful six-cylinder soundtrack for a more modest four-pot. Production ran until 2008, and the electric soft-top mechanism is shared with the rest of the E85 range.· more· less

Common Problems
More demanding than six-cylinder E85 variants
The N46 four-cylinder is widely considered the least desirable E85 engine option, with timing chain, VANOS, Valvetronic, and exhaust manifold issues that the inline-six variants largely avoid. The shared E85 platform problems (roof motor, rear springs, steering column, brake line corrosion) apply equally. With meticulous maintenance and regular roof drain cleaning, reliable ownership is possible, but the 2.0i demands more vigilance than the 2.5i or 3.0i alternatives.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
PCV valve heater fire risk (2005-2006 production, N46 engine) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2003-2008 Z4 E85, selected production dates) Critical - verify completed
EPS steering column limited recall (699 UK cars, selected VINs) Verify if applicable
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recall status. The PCV valve heater recall is particularly critical as it can cause engine bay fires even when parked. The Takata airbag recall affects many 2003-2008 BMW models. The steering column issue was only covered by a limited recall in the UK affecting specific VINs.

Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all Z4 2.0i models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all Z4 2.0i models

BMW Z4 sDrive20i E89
BMW Z4 sDrive20i E89 2011-2016
Successor with turbocharged N20 engine and retractable hardtop. More power but N20 has its own timing chain guide issues. Hardtop adds hydraulic complexity the E85 soft-top avoids.
Mazda MX-5 1.8 NC
Mazda MX-5 1.8 NC 2005-2015
Simpler, lighter roadster with fewer engine problems. NC1 has big end bearing risk but NC2/NC3 are very reliable. Lower running costs across the board.
Audi TT 1.8T 8N
Audi TT 1.8T 8N 1998-2006
Similar era, different approach. Turbo adds coil pack and boost leak concerns but 1.8T bottom end is robust. FWD layout, no soft top mechanism to worry about.
BMW Z4 sDrive28i E89
BMW Z4 sDrive28i E89 2012-2016
Later Z4 with 245 hp turbo four and retractable hardtop. More refined but N20 timing chain and hardtop hydraulics bring similar or higher risk.
Porsche Boxster 2.7 986
Porsche Boxster 2.7 986 1999-2004
Mid-engine Porsche alternative. More engaging to drive but IMS bearing and bore scoring risks mean potentially much higher repair costs.
