BMW's flagship electric SUV built on a bespoke platform at the Dingolfing plant. The xDrive50 uses dual 5th-generation eDrive motors producing 385 kW (523 hp) with a 105.2 kWh usable battery, delivering around 590-630 km WLTP range. It charges at up to 195 kW DC and 11 kW AC. Replaced by a facelifted model (xDrive60) in 2025 with improved motors, rear-wheel steering, and a restyled exterior.· more· less

Common Problems
Recall-heavy first generation, but fundamentally sound drivetrain
The iX xDrive50 has accumulated over 10 recalls in its first three years, concentrated on battery management, charging hardware, and software. Most are addressed through free dealer repairs or OTA updates. The 5th-generation eDrive motors themselves are proving durable, and battery degradation has been minimal (typically 5-7% after 50,000 km). The main ownership risks are 12V battery drain, air suspension wear on equipped cars, and the high cost of windshield and tire replacement. Verifying all recall work is the single most important step when buying used.

Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired or expiring on most used examples
High-voltage battery warranty 8 years / 160,000 km with 70% capacity guarantee
Electric drivetrain warranty Covered under factory warranty period only
BMW extended warranty Available up to 10 years / 120,000 km from first registration
Early 2022 models are now outside the standard 3-year factory warranty. The 8-year HV battery warranty provides long-term protection for the most expensive component. BMW offers extended warranty packages through dealers, typically around €800-1,200 per year. Given the recall history, extended warranty coverage is worth considering for any iX purchased outside the factory period.
