BMW 220d G42

BMW issued a global recall affecting around 800,000 diesel vehicles including the G42 220d. The EGR cooler can develop internal cracks allowing coolant (glycol) to leak into the intake manifold. When mixed with diesel soot at high temperature, the deposit can smoulder and in rare cases cause an engine bay fire. BMW developed a redesigned cooler from a different supplier in 2022. Repair is free under recall - dealers replace the EGR cooler and inspect the intake manifold, replacing it if needed. CRITICAL: verify recall completion using VIN before purchase. Some forum reports suggest the replacement cooler can fail again after a few years, so post-recall failure is still possible (€2,000-4,000 if out of warranty).

BMW launched a global VIN-specific recall covering roughly 575,000 vehicles including G42 2 Series. High start-cycle wear on the starter's magnetic switch can cause hard or no-start conditions and, in rare cases, a short circuit and localised overheating that could lead to fire while driving. Interim guidance from BMW: do not leave the car running unattended. Remedy is starter replacement (and sometimes battery), free under recall. Verify with VIN whether your car is affected and whether the work has been completed. Out-of-warranty replacement cost is approximately €800-1,500 if the recall does not apply or has lapsed.

The B47 was designed to fix the notorious N47 timing chain issue by relocating the chain to the front of the engine. However, the chain itself uses similar single-row design and can still stretch over time, especially with extended oil-change intervals or short urban trips. Symptoms include rattle on cold start lasting more than a couple of seconds. Most G42 cars are too low-mileage for this to manifest yet, but specialists recommend 7,500 km oil intervals with full-synthetic oil to prolong chain life. A failed chain on the B47 typically requires the engine to come out for access (chain at the rear), pushing repair costs to €1,800-3,500 at independent BMW specialists.

Modern Euro 6d diesels have a DPF, SCR catalyst, AdBlue injection and multiple NOx sensors. NOx sensors are a common failure point on B47 cars - typical fault codes P2200, P204F, P20E8. A single NOx sensor is around €300-500 fitted at a specialist. A clogged DPF requires either a forced regeneration (€150-300) or replacement (€1,500-2,500). Avoid cars driven only on short urban trips - look for a service history that includes regular highway use. Check the dashboard for any AdBlue countdown warning before purchase.

iDrive 8 introduced with the G42 has been criticised for software bugs - random screen reboots while driving, the central display going black, paired Bluetooth devices being forgotten after the car has been off, and Apple CarPlay/Android Auto GPS position drift. BMW issues regular over-the-air updates and dealer software flashes; most issues are software-only and resolved through updates. Verify the car is on the latest software version. If a hardware swap is required (rare), the head unit is several hundred euros plus labour, but most cars are still in warranty.

The ZF 8HP fitted to the G42 is widely regarded as one of the best automatics in production. Failures are rare in the early years but the mechatronics unit can develop issues with prolonged use - solenoids, valve body, and the connector sleeve are wear points. BMW labels the fluid as 'lifetime' but virtually every independent specialist recommends a fluid and filter change every 60,000-80,000 km to prevent premature failure. A mechatronics rebuild runs €1,500-2,500 at a specialist; full replacement can reach €3,500. Most G42 cars are too new to show issues yet, but a budget for fluid service should be planned.

The G42 220d has a 48V mild hybrid system with a belt starter-generator (BSG) and small lithium battery. Reported failures include drivetrain warnings, engine cut-out in Comfort/Eco modes, and rare BSG replacement. Many issues are software-related and fixed through dealer updates rather than hardware replacement. A new BSG fitted at BMW is approximately €2,500-3,000 but is unusual at this age. Most early problems are resolved through software updates that should already be applied to current cars.
