The performance variant of BMW's coupe-styled mid-size SUV, mechanically near-identical to the X3 M40i G01 with a more rakish roofline. Pre-LCI cars (2018-2021) use the B58A producing 360 hp; the LCI (2022-2025) uses the B58D with 387 hp and a 48V mild hybrid system. Drivetrain is xDrive all-wheel drive through the ZF 8HP automatic. The B58 is widely considered one of BMW's most robust modern engines, but the X4's tight engine bay and SUV mass create the same cooling system and drivetrain wear concerns seen in the X3 M40i.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable B58 engine, but SUV packaging adds cooling and drivetrain wear concerns
The B58 inline-six is one of BMW's best modern engines, and many X4 M40i examples reach high mileage without major powertrain problems. The ZF 8HP automatic is similarly robust. The main ownership concerns centre on cooling system plastics (expansion tank, vent hose, thermostat housing, oil filter housing gasket), which degrade faster in the X4's tight engine bay than in sedan applications. The xDrive transfer case needs proactive fluid changes that BMW does not schedule from the factory. Suspension and engine mount wear are accelerated by the M40i's firmer setup and start-stop cycling. Overall, this is a well-engineered performance SUV that rewards diligent maintenance.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering rack pinion teeth may break under load (2020 X3 M40i and X4 M40i, NHTSA 19V738000) Critical - verify completed
Starter motor overheating / fire risk (2021-2024 models) Critical - verify completed
Rear cargo rail attachment bolt detachment risk in rear collision (2018-2023 models) Verify completed
Front seatback frame weld defect (2018-2019 models) Verify completed
Rearview camera display non-compliant (2019-2021 models) Verify completed
Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The 2020 steering rack recall and the 2021-2024 starter motor recall are particularly important as both involve serious safety risks. BMW and US regulators have urged affected starter motor owners not to park indoors until the recall repair is complete.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years, 2+1 from Nov 2016) Expired on 2018-2022 models; may remain on 2023+ cars
PCV extended warranty (US: 15 years/240,000 km) Check with BMW dealer for European coverage
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Still active on all G02 models
All pre-2023 BMW X4 M40i models are outside their original 3-year factory warranty (2+1 program, no km limit). The PCV valve cover has extended warranty coverage in the US, but European coverage should be confirmed with a BMW dealer. The 12-year rust perforation warranty still applies to all G02 models. BMW offers extended warranty packages through dealers.
