The mechanical water pump bearings wear, causing coolant leaks or overheating. The thermostat housing (also plastic) can crack. All rubber coolant hoses harden and crack with age. On a 20-year-old X3, the entire cooling system should be considered a wear item. Best practice is to replace the water pump, thermostat, expansion tank, and all hoses together as a preventive overhaul. Individual component failures can cascade quickly since overheating from one leak stresses all other components. Budget approximately €800-1,200 for a complete cooling system overhaul at an independent shop, or €1,500-2,000 at a BMW dealer.

The DISA valve controls airflow in the intake manifold and is a well-known M54 weak point. Engine vibration causes the internal bell crank lever and flapper valve to wear against each other. Symptoms before catastrophic failure include a rattling sound from the intake area, rough idle, and loss of low-RPM torque. Typically fails between 100,000 and 160,000 km. The E83 uses a rear differential with multi-row ball bearings rather than traditional tapered roller bearings.
