The E65 745i was BMW's technology flagship for the early 2000s, pairing the 333 hp N62B44 V8 with Valvetronic variable valve lift, the first-generation iDrive, and self-levelling rear air suspension. It was one of the most advanced production cars of its era, but that complexity came at a steep long-term cost. The N62 engine, ZF 6HP26 transmission, and dense electronics suite all have well-documented failure patterns. Heavy depreciation means these cars are available for a fraction of their original price, but ownership costs remain firmly in premium territory.· more· less

Common Problems
Technologically ambitious but notoriously unreliable
The E65 745i has earned its reputation as one of BMW's least reliable modern cars. The N62 V8 has well-documented issues with valve stem seals, coolant leaks (transfer pipe and valley pan), oil leaks (alternator bracket, valve covers), and Valvetronic system failures. The ZF 6HP26 transmission needs regular fluid changes despite BMW's sealed-for-life marketing. The first-generation iDrive and dense electronics suite add another layer of potential expense. Later production (2004-2005) benefited from running improvements and is generally more dependable than early 2001-2003 cars. A complete service history from a BMW specialist is essential, and buyers should budget for annual repairs well above what a comparable inline-six BMW would require.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Door latch failure with Comfort Access and Soft Close Automatic (2005 models) Verify completed
Transmission rollaway risk (2005 models with Comfort Access) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2001-2005, verify with VIN) Verify with VIN
Fuel tank ventilation valve (various 2002-2004 production) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls and service campaigns have been completed. The door latch and transmission rollaway recalls primarily affect 2005 models with the Comfort Access option. The Takata airbag recall may apply depending on production date and specification. Given the age of these cars, confirm whether any outstanding recalls can still be performed free of charge.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E65 745i models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all E65 745i models
Extended warranty availability Very limited due to vehicle age
All E65 745i models are well outside their original factory and rust perforation warranties. Extended warranty products for cars of this age are rare and typically exclude the most common failure points. Budget for all repairs out of pocket.

BMW 750i F01 2008-2015
Successor with N63 twin-turbo V8. Improved in many areas but the N63 has its own well-documented coolant, oil consumption, and injector problems. Air suspension and electronics remain expensive.
Mercedes-Benz S430 W220
Mercedes-Benz S430 W220 1998-2005
Direct competitor with similar depreciation and complexity. Known for AIRMATIC suspension failures and rust concerns. M113 V8 is generally more reliable than the N62.
Audi A8 D3 4.2
Audi A8 D3 4.2 2002-2010
Similar segment with 4.2 V8. Timing chain service is extremely expensive on the D3. Air suspension costs are comparable. Aluminium body avoids rust but complicates body repairs.
BMW 750i E65
BMW 750i E65 2005-2008
LCI facelift with larger 4.8L N62B48. Revised electronics and improved iDrive. Same fundamental weak points but later production benefited from running changes.
Porsche Panamera S 4.8 V8 970
Porsche Panamera S 4.8 V8 970 2009-2013
More expensive to buy but significantly more reliable. Naturally aspirated V8 avoids many of the N62's complexity issues. Higher parts cost but fewer unexpected failures.
