BMW X3 xDrive30e G01

2020-2024Last reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2020-2024 · 2.0L B48 (184 hp) + electric motor (113 hp), 292 hp combined, plug-in hybrid AWD

The xDrive30e is the plug-in hybrid variant of BMW's G01-generation X3, combining the B48 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder with an electric motor integrated into the ZF 8-speed automatic. Total system output is 292 hp with 420 Nm of torque, sent to all four wheels through permanent xDrive. The 12 kWh battery provides roughly 35-45 km of real-world electric range. Launched in spring 2020 and continued through the 2021 LCI facelift until G01 production ended in August 2024, it brings genuine fuel savings for daily chargers but adds meaningful PHEV complexity over the standard X3 petrol or diesel variants.

Buy if: You charge daily, need a versatile SUV for mixed driving, and can verify HV battery health, recall status, and charging system function before purchase.
Avoid if: You rarely plug in the car, want simple low-maintenance ownership, or the car is outside battery warranty with no health documentation.

Common Problems
Capable PHEV SUV, but hybrid complexity adds meaningful ownership risk
The B48 engine and ZF 8-speed automatic are proven and generally reliable components shared with many BMW models. Most mechanical issues (oil leaks, water pump) are well-documented B48 concerns that also affect the standard 320i and 330i. The additional risk comes from PHEV-specific systems: the KLE charging module is the most commonly reported failure, the electric AC compressor also cools the battery through a shared refrigerant loop, and the 12V system depends entirely on the DC-DC converter. The xDrive transfer case adds further complexity. Cars with complete BMW service history, a verified battery health report, and confirmed recall completion are significantly lower-risk purchases. Daily charging and regular use help maintain battery health and prevent 12V drain issues.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
High-voltage battery cell debris (Samsung) causing fire risk (2020-2021 production) Critical - verify completed
Engine starter relay corrosion and overheating risk (2020-2022 production) Verify completed
Instrument panel / passenger airbag tightening (2018-2020 production) Verify completed
Rearview camera display malfunction (2019-2021 production) Verify completed
The Samsung battery cell debris recall is the most critical for xDrive30e models. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Until the battery recall is confirmed complete, do not charge the vehicle.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on most used cars
HV battery warranty (6 years / 100,000 km) Expiring on 2020 models, check remaining coverage
Extended warranty Available through BMW dealers
The factory warranty (3 years with BMW 2+1 program) has expired on all but the newest 2024 models. The HV battery warranty of 6 years / 100,000 km is the most relevant coverage for used xDrive30e buyers. For 2020 models, this expires in 2026. Verify remaining HV battery warranty with a BMW dealer using the VIN before purchase.
