The second-generation M3 replaced the homologation-special E30 with a more refined inline-six grand tourer. European models received the S50B30 (286 hp, single VANOS) from 1992 to 1995 and the S50B32 (321 hp, double VANOS) from 1995 to 1999. Both engines use individual throttle bodies and rev happily to 7,400 rpm. Available as coupe, sedan, and convertible, with roughly 71,000 units produced. Prices have risen steadily into collector territory, making thorough pre-purchase inspection essential.· more· less

Common Problems
Robust engine in an ageing chassis that needs proactive care
The S50 inline-six is a genuinely durable engine that can exceed 300,000 km with attentive maintenance. The primary ownership challenges are age-related: cooling system, oil seals, suspension bushings, and especially rust. VANOS servicing is an expected cost rather than a surprise. Connecting rod bearing wear is less prevalent than on the successor S54 engine but should still be monitored with oil analysis. The single biggest variable in total cost of ownership is body condition, as structural rust repair can quickly become the most expensive item on the car.
