2005-2011 · 2.0L 4-cylinder turbodiesel M47TU2 (163 hp) / N47 (177 hp)

The E90 320d is BMW's best-selling diesel sedan of its generation, offering rear-wheel-drive dynamics with good fuel economy. Two engines were fitted: the M47TU2 (2005-2007, 163 hp) is a proven four-cylinder with manageable issues, while the N47 (2007-2011, 177 hp) brings more power but introduces the well-documented rear-mounted timing chain weakness. Identifying the engine is the most important step when buying.

Proven diesel, huge aftermarket Engaging rear-wheel-drive chassis
N47 timing chain at rear of engine Swirl flap failure risk (both engines)
Buy if: You find an M47TU2 model with swirl flaps addressed, or a post-2010 N47 with documented short oil change intervals and no cold-start rattle.
Avoid if: The car has an N47 engine with cold-start chain rattle, unknown service history, or was primarily driven on short urban trips.

Common Problems
Engine choice defines the ownership experience
The E90 320d's reliability depends heavily on which engine is fitted. The M47TU2 (2005-2007, 163 hp) is a fundamentally solid diesel with manageable issues: swirl flap deletion, CCV maintenance, and turbo longevity are the main concerns. The N47 (2007-2011, 177 hp) adds the well-documented rear-mounted timing chain weakness, which is the single biggest risk factor on this car. Cars built March 2007 through January 2009 are most severely affected. Both engines share turbo actuator, DPF, EGR, and oil leak concerns. With short oil change intervals (10,000 km maximum), regular highway driving, and proactive maintenance, many E90 320d models reach 200,000+ km. Always identify the engine before buying and budget accordingly.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler internal leak with fire risk (N47 diesel engines, various production dates) Critical - verify completed
Timing chain tensioner product enhancement (N47 engines produced February 2007 - June 2008) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2005-2011, applies to cars with aftermarket steering wheels) Verify completed
Blower regulator connection (October 2004 - May 2011 production) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is particularly important for N47 models as it addresses a potential fire risk. The timing chain tensioner product enhancement covers early N47 production and should be verified on 2007-2008 cars.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E90 320d models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all models (latest cars expired 2023)
Extended warranty availability Third-party only, limited for this age
All E90 320d models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. Extended warranty coverage from third-party providers may be available but is increasingly limited and expensive for cars of this age. Budget for self-funded repairs.

↔ Also consider

BMW 330i E90 2005-2011 Same chassis with petrol inline-6. No DPF or timing chain concerns on the N52, but N53 direct-injection models have expensive piezo injector failures. Audi A4 2.0 TDI B8 2008-2015 More modern platform with proven EA189/EA288 diesel. No catastrophic timing chain risk, but Multitronic CVT gearbox is unreliable if fitted. Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI W204 2007-2014 Direct competitor. Electronic steering lock failures and rear subframe corrosion are the main concerns. Higher overall risk profile. BMW 320d E46 1998-2005 Previous generation with the M47 diesel. Simpler and cheaper to maintain, but turbo failures and swirl flap issues remain. No N47 timing chain risk. BMW 120d E87 2007-2011 Same N47 engine in a smaller package. Identical timing chain, EGR, and turbo actuator issues. Cheaper to buy but similar running costs.
