The E36 3 Series brought BMW's compact sedan into the modern era, and the 318i was its most popular variant in Europe. Early cars (1990-1993) use the belt-driven M40B18, while post-1993 models received the improved chain-driven M43B18 with roller rockers and electronic engine management. Both engines are fundamentally durable, and the rear-wheel-drive chassis remains a benchmark for balanced handling. At 25+ years old, the main concerns are structural rust and aging ancillary systems rather than the engine itself.· more· less

Buy if: You want an affordable, well-balanced rear-drive sedan and can find one with solid bodywork and documented cooling system maintenance.

Common Problems
Robust engine, but age demands preventive maintenance
Both the M40B18 and M43B18 engines are among BMW's most straightforward four-cylinders. The M43 uses a timing chain (no belt replacement needed), has no VANOS system, and only 8 valves. With basic maintenance, the engine can exceed 300,000 km. The main ownership concerns at this age are cooling system integrity, structural rust, and worn suspension components. A well-maintained E36 318i with solid bodywork and a refreshed cooling system can be a remarkably affordable car to run. The key is thorough pre-purchase inspection, particularly for hidden rust.

Takata airbag inflator (select E36 models with original airbag modules) Verify with VIN
Due to the age of the E36, most recalls have been completed long ago. However, verify with BMW using the VIN that all applicable recalls have been addressed. The Takata airbag recall may still apply if the original airbag module has never been replaced.
