BMW 125i E82

2011-2013Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2011-2013 · 3.0L N52B30 naturally aspirated inline-6 (218 hp)

The 125i is the rational enthusiast pick in the E82 coupe range: a naturally aspirated 3.0L inline-six with 218 hp, rear-wheel drive, and a simpler mechanical package than the turbocharged 135i. Introduced only with the 2011 LCI facelift, the 125i kept the N52B30 engine that BMW already had a decade of experience with, and skipped the high-pressure fuel pump, direct injection, and twin turbos that made the 135i famous but expensive. As a used buy in 2026, the appeal is a compact RWD BMW coupe with fewer big-ticket failure modes than its turbocharged siblings.

N52 inline-6 is robust and well-understood No turbo, no HPFP, no DI-related issues
Electric water pump fails around 150,000 km Oil leaks from multiple gasket points
Buy if: You want a naturally aspirated rear-wheel-drive BMW coupe with inline-six smoothness and more predictable running costs than the 135i.
Avoid if: You want a turbocharged car that can be easily tuned for more power, or you cannot budget for €1,500-2,500 in preventive maintenance early in ownership.
Expected Annual Maintenance Costs
€850 - €1,750/year

Common Problems
Fundamentally robust engine, but gaskets and pumps will need attention
The N52B30 is one of BMW's better modern engines: naturally aspirated, port injected, no HPFP, no turbos. Most failure modes are predictable age and heat-cycle issues - water pump, gaskets, VANOS solenoids, and the eccentric shaft sensor - rather than catastrophic engine problems. A 125i bought with paperwork showing water pump replacement and a recent top-end reseal is a far lower-risk purchase than one without.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata driver airbag inflator (2008-2013 1 Series) Verify completed
Fuel pump seal leakage (selected 2011-2012 production) Verify completed
Electric power steering motor (selected 2012 production) Verify completed
Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all open recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is particularly important and is free of charge regardless of mileage.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all 125i E82s
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired from 2023-2025 depending on build date
Extended warranty availability Available through BMW dealers and third parties (€500-900/year)
All 125i E82s are now outside their original factory warranty. Independent BMW warranty products are available but typically exclude known wear items like water pumps and gaskets. Read exclusions carefully before purchasing any extended coverage.

BMW 135i N54 E82 2007-2010 Same chassis, twin-turbo N54 instead of naturally aspirated N52. Much faster but adds HPFP, injector, and wastegate issues. Running costs are significantly higher. BMW 320i E90 2005-2011 Same N52 engine family in a sedan body. Shares the electric water pump and valve cover gasket weaknesses. Practical 4-door alternative with nearly identical ownership costs. Audi S3 8P 2.0 TFSI 2006-2012 AWD turbo alternative in a similar price bracket. More complex with turbo, direct injection, and Haldex AWD. Generally more reliable engine but costlier AWD service. BMW M235i F22 2014-2016 Spiritual successor with turbocharged N55 in the newer 2 Series coupe. More power, more modern cabin, but water pump and oil filter housing gasket concerns remain. BMW Z3 2.8 1997-2000 Older naturally aspirated inline-six roadster with simpler M52 engine. Fewer electronics to fail but chassis and rust concerns from age.
