The i3s shares the same integrated AC/battery cooling architecture as the standard i3. The compressor cools both the cabin and the high-voltage battery through a shared refrigerant circuit with no particulate trap. When the compressor fails catastrophically, metal shavings contaminate the expansion valves, condenser, and battery cooling passages. If debris reaches the battery cooling tray, repair costs can exceed the car's market value. BMW updated the compressor six times between 2013 and 2019, and 120Ah-era cars (2018+) including all i3s models have improved later-revision compressors with significantly lower failure rates than earlier cars. A simple compressor replacement without contamination costs €1,500-3,000. A full system flush with battery cooling circuit repair runs €5,000-10,000 at a dealer. Listen for unusual AC compressor sounds and monitor cooling performance.

The most commonly reported i3/i3s issue across all model years. The 12V auxiliary battery powers all non-propulsion systems (lights, infotainment, door locks, contactors) and typically fails every 3-4 years. Symptoms progress from intermittent infotainment glitches and random warning lights to door lock malfunctions and eventually a complete no-start condition — even though the main battery is fully charged. Importantly, a failing 12V battery can trigger the same drivetrain malfunction errors as a failing EME module, so always check the 12V battery first before assuming expensive component failure. Replacement costs €150-300. Using a trickle charger when the car sits for more than a few days extends life significantly. Budget for proactive replacement every 3 years.

The i3s's strong regenerative braking means friction brakes are barely used in daily driving. This causes the brake discs to develop heavy surface rust and eventually deep pitting, particularly on the rear axle. By 60,000-80,000 km, many owners find discs corroded beyond safe use despite brake pads having plenty of material remaining. The i3 does have an auto-dry feature that lightly touches pads to discs in wet conditions, but this is insufficient to prevent long-term corrosion. Replacement costs €400-800 for a full set including pads. To slow corrosion, periodically apply the friction brakes firmly during driving. Some owners switch to coated or composite discs for longer life.

A design flaw causes the thin heating element wire to fracture where it passes over a metal rod spanning the seat base. The break results in the seat heater either not working at all or switching off within seconds of activation. This is frustrating in an EV where seat heaters are used to conserve battery range instead of cabin heating. BMW has replaced multiple seat heaters under warranty on some cars, suggesting the design itself is the root cause. Dealer repair costs €400-500 for a new heating mat plus labor to disassemble the seat. Independent specialists charge €200-350. Some owners repair the broken wire themselves for under €20, though this requires removing the seat cover.

The i3s BEV (non-heat-pump equipped models) uses a high-voltage resistive heater element for cabin heating. When this fails, no warm air reaches the cabin. The heater element costs approximately €500. However, if water ingress damages the HV cable connection, it triggers additional faults in the coolant pump (EKK) and associated HV components, escalating costs dramatically. BMW dealers sometimes insist on replacing the entire HV heater circuit including cables and the EKK, pushing quotes to €2,000-2,500. Independent EV specialists can often replace just the heater element for €500-800. Cars equipped with the optional heat pump are less affected.

BMW recalled i3 and i3s models built between December 2018 and March 2019 for an EME module defect caused by supplier contamination during manufacturing. The defect increases electrical resistance, causing the module to shut off high-voltage power and resulting in complete loss of propulsion while driving. BMW replaced affected modules under recall at no cost. Outside the recall population, spontaneous EME failures are rare on 120Ah-era cars including the i3s. The 120Ah platform also received upgraded tapered roller motor bearings that are more durable than earlier ball bearings, reducing bearing-induced EME damage risk. If replacement is needed out of warranty, a new unit from BMW costs €5,500-7,000 including labor. Refurbished modules from specialists cost €3,000-4,500.

The electrically operated charge port door can fail to open reliably, particularly in cold weather. Symptoms include grinding noises when the flap attempts to open, incomplete opening, or complete failure. A manual release pull cord behind the rear passenger door trim provides emergency access. The actuator motor costs €100-200 and replacement is straightforward. Total repair costs €200-450 at a BMW dealer. Updated actuator designs are more reliable than original components. This is annoying rather than mobility-critical due to the manual release.
