The sportier version of BMW's pioneering electric city car, the i3s adds 10 kW more power, a 10 mm lower ride height, 40 mm wider track, and unique 20-inch wheels with wider tires. Built on the same lightweight CFRP body and aluminium chassis as the standard i3, the drivetrain is mechanically identical apart from a slightly different motor mapping. The 42.2 kWh battery offers around 240-260 km real-world range. Production ran from 2018 to mid-2022.· more· less

Excellent battery longevity Carbon fibre body resists corrosion
AC compressor can cause total loss Expensive unique 20-inch tire sizes
Buy if: You want a nimble, fun-to-drive city EV with better handling than the standard i3 and can budget for its unusual tire sizes.
Avoid if: You need long-distance capability (50 kW DC max) or cannot accept the small risk of a catastrophic AC compressor failure.

Common Problems
Reliable EV with one potentially catastrophic weak point
The BMW i3s is fundamentally the same reliable platform as the standard i3 120Ah — simple drivetrain, proven battery with minimal degradation, and a lightweight CFRP body that eliminates corrosion concerns. The 12V battery and brake disc corrosion are the most common issues and inexpensive to manage proactively. The AC compressor failure is rare on 2018+ models but can be devastating when it occurs. Verify the EME recall has been completed on Dec 2018 - Mar 2019 builds. The sport-specific wider tires are more expensive than the standard i3's 19-inch items but wear at a similar rate.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EME module defect causing loss of propulsion (Dec 2018 - Mar 2019 production) Critical - verify completed
High-voltage battery cell production defect with fire risk (Oct 2018 - Aug 2021 production) Verify completed
Seat belt retractor micro gas generator defect Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EME module recall is critical for i3s models built between December 2018 and March 2019. The high-voltage battery cell recall (2022) affects a wide range of production dates through August 2021.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all i3s models
High-voltage battery (8 years / 160,000 km) May still be active on 2019-2022 models
BMW extended warranty Available through BMW dealers
Rust perforation (12 years) Active on all i3s models (CFRP body does not rust)
All i3s models are outside their 2-year factory warranty. However, the 8-year / 160,000 km high-voltage battery warranty (70% capacity guarantee) may still cover 2019-2022 models. The carbon fibre body does not corrode, making the rust perforation warranty largely irrelevant for body panels, though aluminium chassis components are covered.
