The 425d sits between the 420d and 430d in BMW's diesel coupe range, offering strong torque and good fuel economy. Pre-2016 cars use the twin-turbo N47S1 (218 hp) with the timing chain at the rear. From 2016 the B47 (224 hp) replaced it, relocating the chain to the front and resolving the most serious reliability concern. Both engines share the EGR cooler fire-risk recall, which must be verified before any purchase.· more· less

Strong mid-range torque (450 Nm) B47 engine well proven and durable
N47S1 timing chain risk (pre-2016) EGR cooler fire recall on all diesels

Common Problems
Engine generation determines reliability outlook
The BMW 425d F32 shares its platform and engines with the 420d and 320d, and the same reliability split applies. Pre-2016 models with the N47S1 twin-turbo carry the well-documented rear-mounted timing chain risk and swirl flap concerns, making thorough cold-start inspection essential. Post-2016 models with the B47 engine are more robust, with the chain relocated to the front and a revised intake. Both generations share the EGR cooler fire recall (must be verified), DPF sensitivity to short trips, and the common F3x steering rack knock. With proper maintenance and regular motorway driving, the B47 425d is dependable for high mileages.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler leak with fire risk (N47S1 and B47 diesels, expanded multiple times since 2018) Critical - verify completed
Coolant pump electrical connector short circuit risk (2012-2018, recall 24V-608) Verify if applicable
Head airbag inflator weld joint failure (2014 model year F32) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2013-2015 models) Verify completed
Engine starter overheating fire risk (various model years) Verify if applicable
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is the most critical and has been expanded several times since the initial 2018 campaign. Even if a previous repair was performed, BMW may have extended the recall scope. The coolant pump connector recall (24V-608) affects certain 2012-2018 models with 4-cylinder engines. The Takata airbag campaign is an ongoing global recall.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on all used 425d F32 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on 2014+ models until 2026-2032
Extended warranty availability Available through BMW dealers and third-party providers
All F32 425d models are now outside their original factory warranty. BMW introduced a 2+1 year warranty from November 2016, giving late-production cars three years of coverage, but even those have now expired. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to cars built from 2014 onwards. Third-party extended warranties are available but typically exclude pre-existing conditions like timing chain noise or DPF issues.
