The N47S1 engine (fitted to 425d models built before 2016) positions its timing chain at the rear of the engine, between the block and gearbox. The F32 shares the F30's electric power steering rack, which is well known for developing a knocking or clunking noise when driving over small bumps at low speed. Failed regeneration cycles dump unburnt fuel into the engine oil, raising the oil level and diluting its lubricating properties. Symptoms include coolant warning light, rapid temperature rise, and poor cabin heating. The pump is often integrated with the thermostat housing. In the worst case, broken flap material can enter the combustion chamber, damaging pistons and valves. A new intake manifold runs approximately 850-1,200 euros fitted.
