2011-2019 · 2.0L N47/B47 4-cylinder turbodiesel (184-190 hp)

The sportiest diesel hatchback in its class, the F20 120d pairs a punchy 2.0-litre turbodiesel with rear-wheel drive and engaging handling. Pre-LCI models (2011-2015) use the N47 engine with its well-documented rear-mounted timing chain weakness, while the 2015 facelift brought the significantly improved B47 engine with the chain relocated to the front. This engine distinction matters enormously for reliability and should be the first thing a buyer checks.

Rear-wheel-drive handling Strong diesel economy (4.5-5.5 l/100 km)
N47 timing chain risk (pre-2015) EGR cooler recall affects most models
Buy if: You want a sporty diesel hatch with rear-wheel drive and can find a post-2015 LCI with the B47 engine, or a pre-2015 with documented short oil change intervals and no cold-start rattle.
Avoid if: The car has cold-start chain rattle, unknown service history, or was primarily used for short urban trips without regular highway driving.

Common Problems
Engine generation is the key factor for reliability
The BMW 120d F20 straddles two very different reliability profiles. Pre-2015 models with the N47 engine carry the well-documented timing chain risk and swirl flap concerns, making thorough inspection essential. Post-2015 LCI models with the B47 engine are significantly more reliable, with the chain relocated to the front and improved intake components. Both engines share the EGR cooler recall (verify completion), DPF sensitivity to short trips, and steering rack knocking. With proper maintenance and highway driving, the B47 120d is a dependable car. The N47 version requires more vigilance but can also reach high mileages with short oil change intervals.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler leak and fire risk (2011-2017 diesel models, expanded multiple times since 2018) Critical - verify completed
Electric power steering (EPS) control unit fire risk (2011-2016 models) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2011-2013 models) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is safety-critical and has been expanded several times. Even if a previous repair was done, BMW may have since extended the recall scope to include additional production runs.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used F20 120d models
Extended warranty from Nov 2016 3 years for cars sold new from Nov 2016 onwards
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models
All F20 120d models are now outside their original factory warranty. BMW introduced a 2+1 year warranty from November 2016, giving late-production cars (2017-2019) three years of coverage, but even those have now expired. Third-party extended warranties are available but typically exclude pre-existing timing chain noise and DPF issues.
