The flagship diesel in BMW's current 7 Series, pairing the proven B57 3.0-litre inline-six with 48V mild hybrid technology, standard air suspension, and the most advanced iDrive 8 infotainment system in any BMW. The B57 engine is widely regarded as one of BMW's most robust modern diesels, with a strong track record across the 5 Series and X5 range. Flagship complexity is the main ownership concern rather than the engine itself.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable engine, but flagship electronics and air suspension drive costs
The B57 inline-six diesel is one of BMW's strongest modern engines, capable of exceeding 300,000 km with proper maintenance. The main ownership risks in the G70 come not from the engine but from the flagship-level complexity around it: standard air suspension, the 48V mild hybrid system, iDrive 8 electronics, and the integrated braking system that has been subject to multiple recalls. Cars used for their intended purpose of long-distance motorway driving with regular servicing should be reliable. Short-trip urban use significantly increases DPF and EGR costs. Keep the car on a trickle charger if not driven daily.

The G70 7 Series has an unusually high number of recalls for a new-generation BMW. The integrated braking system recall is the most safety-critical and has been expanded multiple times. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Some 2023 cars may have required two separate IBS module replacements.

BMW Extended Care Available through BMW dealers, extends coverage beyond factory warranty
The 740d G70 benefits from BMW's 2+1 warranty policy (3 years total, no km limit), introduced from November 2016. Early 2022-2023 models may be approaching the end of their factory warranty. Given the high number of recalls on this generation, verifying recall completion is especially important before purchase. BMW Extended Care can provide additional coverage.
