The failure typically comes without warning: the pump simply stops working and the engine overheats rapidly. Continued driving after the warning light comes on risks head gasket or cylinder head damage, turning a €700-1,400 repair into a much larger bill. The pump itself costs €350-500 and replacement labour takes 2-4 hours depending on shop access. Many BMW specialists recommend preventive replacement at 100,000 km. The main concern beyond the leak itself is that oil can drip onto the serpentine belt and alternator, causing belt slip or electrical issues. This is one of the most commonly reported N55 maintenance items and typically appears between 80,000 and 120,000 km.

The BMW xDrive system uses a transfer case with an electronically controlled actuator motor to distribute torque between front and rear axles. The internal gear teeth are made of softer material and wear down over time, typically between 120,000 and 180,000 km. When the gear strips, the actuator motor spins but cannot engage the clutch properly, triggering a trifecta of warning lights: ABS, DSC, and 4x4. The cheapest repair is replacing just the internal gear using an aftermarket repair kit (€100-150 for parts plus 2-3 hours labour), totalling €300-500 at an independent shop. The N55 single twin-scroll turbocharger can develop a metallic rattle from worn wastegate bushings and pivot points.
