BMW's first coupe-SUV pairs the proven N55 turbocharged inline-six with xDrive all-wheel drive and the ZF 8HP automatic in a sloping-roof body derived from the X3 F25. The 306 hp output delivers strong straight-line performance, while the chassis tuning leans sportier than the X3 it shares its platform with. The N55 is a fundamentally solid engine with a well-documented maintenance profile, but oil sealing issues, the electric water pump, and xDrive-specific transfer case wear require proactive attention on higher-mileage examples.· more· less

Common Problems
Manageable with proactive maintenance, but oil leaks are near-certain
The N55 inline-six is fundamentally a robust engine that can exceed 250,000 km with attentive ownership. However, oil sealing issues (valve cover, OFHG) are nearly universal by 120,000 km and should be budgeted for. The electric water pump is the single biggest surprise-failure risk due to its lack of warning. The xDrive transfer case actuator adds a cost layer that rear-wheel-drive N55 cars avoid. Most issues are well-documented with widely available parts, and independent BMW specialists can handle all repairs at reasonable cost.

Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all F26 X4s
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014-2018 cars depending on delivery date
Extended warranty Available through BMW dealers and third-party providers
All BMW X4 F26 models are now well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. BMW offered a 2+1 extension from November 2016, but even those are expired. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active on later cars. Check with a BMW dealer using the VIN.
