BMW's first compact SUV paired with the proven M57 inline-six turbodiesel, built by Magna Steyr in Graz, Austria. Pre-facelift models (2003-2006) use the M57TU producing 201 hp, while post-facelift cars (2004-2010) received the M57TU2 with 215 hp and 500 Nm. Both use common-rail injection and a variable-geometry turbocharger, delivering strong mid-range torque suited to the X3's character. The M57 is widely regarded as one of BMW's most durable diesel engines, and many examples have exceeded 300,000 km without major engine work when properly maintained.· more· less

Common Problems
Robust engine in an ageing platform that needs proactive maintenance
The M57 inline-six is widely considered one of BMW's most reliable diesel engines, and many examples exceed 300,000 km. However, the E83 platform is now 15-20+ years old, meaning age-related issues like oil leaks, cooling system wear, and transfer case problems are common regardless of mileage. The swirl flap risk is the most critical item to verify. If the swirl flaps have been blanked and the transfer case serviced, the 3.0d is a durable and capable ownership proposition.
