The F01 7 Series was BMW's technology flagship when it launched in 2008, introducing the fifth-generation iDrive system, optional air suspension, and a suite of driver-assistance features that were cutting-edge at the time. The 740i uses a turbocharged 3.0L inline-six rather than the V8 found in the 750i, making it the more sensible choice for long-term ownership. Pre-LCI models (2008-2012) use the twin-turbo N54 while the LCI (2012-2015) switched to the single-turbo N55 with Valvetronic. Both produce around 320 hp and pair with ZF automatic transmissions.· more· less

N55 LCI is a robust inline-6 Strong depreciation, good value used
N54 pre-LCI has turbo/HPFP issues Complex electronics, costly repairs
Buy if: You want flagship luxury with a proven inline-6 and can find a well-documented LCI (2012+) example with complete service history.
Avoid if: You cannot budget for specialist-level repair bills or are looking at a pre-LCI N54 model without verified HPFP and injector replacement history.

Common Problems
Reliable inline-6, but flagship complexity demands careful buying
The F01 740i benefits from using BMW's proven turbocharged inline-6 rather than the more troublesome N63 V8 found in the 750i. The LCI N55 engine (2012-2015) is notably more reliable than the pre-LCI N54, which carries HPFP, injector, and twin-turbo wastegate risks. Regardless of engine variant, oil filter housing and valve cover gasket leaks are common maintenance items by 100,000 km. The optional air suspension adds a significant cost variable. Electronics and comfort systems add complexity that can produce expensive surprises. A well-maintained LCI model with steel suspension and verified service history is the lowest-risk configuration.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
VANOS adjustment unit bolt loosening (2009-2012 N51/N52/N55 engines, production Oct 2009 - Apr 2012) Verify completed
Turbocharger coolant pump electromigration (pre-Feb 2011 V8 models only, not applicable to 740i I6) Not applicable
Takata airbag inflator (various production years 2008-2015) Verify completed
HPFP extended warranty (N54 engines, 10 years / 190,000 km) Verify if applicable
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The VANOS bolt recall is particularly important for 2009-2012 models. The HPFP warranty extension applies to N54 engines only and may have expired by age on most F01s.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all F01 models
HPFP extended warranty (N54) 10 years / 190,000 km (likely expired by age)
Rust perforation warranty 12 years from first registration
All F01 740i models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. The N54 HPFP extended warranty (10 years) has likely expired on most examples. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still cover late-production 2014-2015 models.
