2020-2022Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2020-2022 · 1.5L B38 3-cylinder turbo petrol + electric motor (220 hp combined, 9.7 kWh battery)

BMW's compact plug-in hybrid SUV combining the front-mounted 1.5L B38 three-cylinder turbo petrol with a rear-axle electric motor for through-the-road xDrive. Sold mainly to company car drivers chasing low CO2 / BiK tax, and now widely available used. Two recalls dominate the buying decision: the high-voltage battery recall 20V-601 (build window Jan-Sep 2020) and a smaller seatbelt retractor recall on some 2022 cars. Verify both before signing.

Cheap to run if charged daily Mature 8-year HV battery warranty
Slow 3.7 kW AC charging only B38 timing chain wear risk
Buy if: You can charge at home daily, your typical trip is under 30 km, and you have written confirmation that recall 20V-601 has been completed.
Avoid if: You mostly drive longer motorway trips, cannot charge at home, or the seller cannot prove the HV battery recall has been carried out.

Common Problems
Recall verification turns this from risky to reasonable
The X1 25e is mechanically more complex than the petrol or diesel X1 (engine + electric motor + HV battery + AC charging electronics) so there are simply more things that can go wrong. The good news is that the biggest single risk (the 2020 HV battery recall) is already fixed on most cars in the field — verify it before buying and the rest is mainstream BMW ownership. The B38 engine and the 12V aux battery are the recurring weak points. The economics only work out if you actually plug it in daily.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
High-voltage battery recall 20V-601 (build Jan-Sep 2020) — fire risk Critical - verify completed
Front seatbelt retractor micro gas generator (some 2022 cars) Verify completed
Contact any BMW dealer with the VIN to confirm both recalls have been completed. The 2020 HV battery recall is the single most important check — without it the car cannot be safely charged.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all X1 25e
High-voltage battery warranty 8 years / 100,000 km from first registration
Recall remedies Free for life of vehicle once notified
The 2-year factory warranty has expired on all X1 25e models. The HV battery is covered for 8 years / 100,000 km against capacity loss below 70% and against defects, transferable between owners. Verify HV battery health and remaining warranty before purchase.

BMW X1 sDrive20i F48 2015-2022 Same chassis without the hybrid complexity. No HV battery, no rear electric axle, fewer ways to fail. Better choice if you do not actually charge daily. BMW X1 xDrive20d F48 2015-2022 Diesel xDrive sibling. Mechanical xDrive instead of through-the-road hybrid xDrive. More motorway-friendly, no battery recall to worry about, but DPF and EGR concerns instead. BMW 330e G20 2019-present Same plug-in hybrid concept on the 3 Series. Also affected by recall 20V-601. Larger 12 kWh battery and same 3.7 kW AC charging share the same limitations. Mercedes-Benz GLA 250 4MATIC H247 2020-present Direct premium compact SUV competitor. The Mercedes 250e PHEV equivalent has higher 11 kW AC charging and a larger battery, with fewer reported recall issues. Audi Q3 35 TFSI F3 2018-present Petrol competitor. The Q3 45 TFSI e PHEV variant has a similar profile to the X1 25e but Audi's 1.4 TFSI has its own coolant pump and timing chain weaknesses.
