BMW's compact plug-in hybrid SUV pairs the 1.5 B38 three-cylinder with a rear-axle electric motor for through-the-road xDrive. Sold mainly to company-car buyers chasing low BIK tax, so many were rarely plugged in. Two recalls dominate the buying decision: HV battery recall 20V-601 on Jan-Sep 2020 builds, and a seatbelt retractor recall on some 2022 cars.· more· less

Common Problems
Recall verification turns this from risky to reasonable
The X1 25e is mechanically more complex than the petrol or diesel X1, with an engine, electric motor, HV battery and AC charging electronics all working together. The biggest single risk (the 2020 HV battery recall) is already fixed on most cars in the field. Verify it before buying and the rest is mainstream BMW ownership. The B38 timing chain, 12V auxiliary battery and infotainment glitches are the recurring weak points. The economics only work out if you actually plug it in daily.
