BMW X1 xDrive20d E84
2009-2015Last updated: March 2026
2009-2015 · 2.0d N47 (177-184 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel
BMW's first compact SUV, based on the rear-wheel-drive E90 3 Series platform. The xDrive20d combines a torquey 2.0-litre diesel with permanent all-wheel drive, offering a driving experience closer to an estate car than a traditional SUV. Build quality is solid and parts availability is excellent thanks to shared components with the 1 and 3 Series.

Strong diesel torque, low fuel use
N47 timing chain is a known risk
xDrive adds transfer case complexity
Buy if: You want a compact BMW SUV with AWD capability and can verify that the timing chain has been replaced or inspected on pre-2012 cars.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF clogging risk) or cannot confirm timing chain history on early N47 models.

Known Issues most common first
Chain stretches from rear of engine, requiring transmission removal for access · more· less
The N47 diesel has the timing chain at the rear of the engine (gearbox side), making replacement extremely labour-intensive. Pre-September 2009 engines are most vulnerable, but all N47 variants can be affected. The chain and tensioner wear over time, causing rattle on cold start that worsens progressively. If the chain skips or snaps, valve-to-piston contact destroys the engine. Preventive replacement at a BMW specialist costs approximately 1,500-2,200 euros including clutch and dual mass flywheel if done together (recommended). If the chain has already caused engine damage, costs escalate to 3,500-5,000 euros for engine rebuild or replacement. Post-2011 N47TU engines have improved chain components and are significantly less prone to failure, though not immune. Oil changes every 10,000 km rather than BMW's extended interval reduce risk considerably.
Plastic gears inside transfer case actuator wear out, triggering drivetrain warning lights · more· less
The ATC35L transfer case in the E84 xDrive uses a servo motor with plastic internal gears that wear over time. Symptoms include 4x4 warning light, ABS and traction control deactivation, clicking noise from the transfer case after engine shutdown, and drivetrain vibrations. Replacing just the actuator motor costs 800-1,200 euros. If the internal clutch pack is damaged from running with mismatched tires, a full transfer case replacement runs 2,000-2,500 euros. Prevention: always run matched tires within 3mm tread depth difference across all four wheels, and change transfer case fluid every 60,000 km despite BMW claiming lifetime fill.
EGR cooler can leak coolant internally, creating fire risk in extreme cases · more· less
The EGR system on the N47 has two failure modes. First, the EGR valve itself clogs with carbon deposits, causing rough idle, loss of power, and increased emissions. Cleaning or replacing the valve costs 400-600 euros. Second, the EGR cooler can develop internal leaks, allowing coolant to mix with exhaust soot. BMW issued a recall covering approximately 800,000 diesel vehicles across Europe for EGR cooler replacement due to potential fire risk. Cars produced between April 2015 and September 2016 with the N47TU are specifically covered, but earlier cars can also develop this issue. EGR cooler replacement costs 800-1,500 euros. Always verify the recall status with BMW using the VIN.
Diesel particulate filter blocks when the car rarely reaches motorway speeds · more· less
The DPF requires temperatures above 600 degrees to regenerate, which typically requires 20-30 minutes of motorway driving. Cars used predominantly for short urban trips will accumulate soot faster than the system can clear it. Warning lights and limp mode follow. A forced regeneration via diagnostics costs 100-200 euros if performed early. If ash has accumulated beyond the point of regeneration, a professional DPF clean costs 400-600 euros. Full DPF replacement runs 1,200-2,000 euros including fitting. Check DPF soot level with diagnostics before purchase. Values above 30 grams suggest imminent problems.
Plastic swirl flaps in intake manifold break and can be ingested by the engine · more· less
The N47 uses plastic swirl flaps in the intake manifold to optimise airflow at different engine speeds. Over time, the plastic deteriorates from heat cycling and vibration. If a flap breaks loose and enters a cylinder, it causes catastrophic engine damage requiring a full rebuild at 3,000-3,500 euros. Preventive swirl flap delete kits cost 250-350 euros fitted, though this may require a remap on post-2013 engines. Symptoms of impending failure include rough idle, slight power loss, and intake manifold rattle. Many specialists recommend proactive deletion as a precaution.
Gasket hardens and leaks oil, often noticed as drips on the driveway · more· less
The oil filter housing gasket is a common leak point on the N47 engine, typically appearing between 80,000-150,000 km as the rubber gasket hardens from heat cycling. Oil seeps from the housing and can drip onto hot exhaust components, creating a burning oil smell. The gasket itself costs under 20 euros, but labour runs 2-4 hours due to limited access. Independent shops charge 300-400 euros, BMW dealers 450-600 euros. Often combined with valve cover gasket replacement to save on labour.
Electronic wastegate actuator seizes from carbon buildup and heat exposure · more· less
The electronic turbo wastegate actuator on the N47 can seize due to carbon deposits and heat degradation. When stuck open, the turbo produces insufficient boost causing sluggish acceleration. When stuck closed, over-boost occurs which triggers limp mode to protect the engine. The actuator alone costs 400-700 euros to replace. If the actuator seizure has caused turbo bearing damage, full turbo replacement runs 1,200-1,800 euros. Regular motorway driving helps keep the actuator moving freely. Cars that are predominantly city-driven are more susceptible.
N47 engine needs attention, but well-maintained examples are dependable
The X1 E84 xDrive20d shares most of its mechanicals with the proven E90 3 Series. The N47 diesel's timing chain reputation is worse than its actual failure rate when properly maintained with 10,000 km oil changes. Post-2011 N47TU engines are notably improved. The xDrive system adds transfer case maintenance requirements that the sDrive variants avoid. Overall, this is a car that rewards diligent maintenance and punishes neglect.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
-
Service history
Complete BMW dealer or specialist records essential. Verify oil changes were done at maximum 15,000 km intervals, ideally 10,000 km.
-
Tires
All four tires must be within 3mm tread depth of each other. Mismatched tires damage the xDrive transfer case.
-
Cold start
Start engine completely cold. Listen for timing chain rattle in the first 10-30 seconds from the rear of the engine.
-
Test drive
Minimum 30 minutes including motorway speeds. Monitor for drivetrain warning lights and DPF regeneration behaviour.
-
Listen for N47 timing chain rattle on cold start
A metallic rattle from the bellhousing area during the first 5-30 seconds of cold start indicates chain wear. Longer rattle duration means more urgent replacement needed.
-
Check xDrive warning lights during test drive
Drive at varying speeds for 20+ minutes. Watch for 4x4, ABS, or traction control warning lights. Listen for clicking from the transfer case after turning off the engine.
-
Read DPF soot loading with diagnostics
Use BMW-specific diagnostic tool (ISTA) to check DPF soot level. Above 30 grams indicates clogging risk. Also check regeneration history and intervals.
