The F25 X3 xDrive30d pairs BMW's N57 3.0-litre inline-six turbodiesel with the ZF 8HP automatic and permanent xDrive all-wheel drive, producing 258 hp and 560 Nm. It is the performance diesel of the F25 range, favoured for its smooth power delivery, strong motorway economy around 6.5-7.5 l/100 km, and genuine 230 km/h cruising ability. The N57 single-turbo variant used in the 30d is widely considered the most reliable of BMW's six-cylinder diesel family, with many examples exceeding 200,000 km without major engine work. A 2014 LCI facelift brought revised styling and updated electronics.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable inline-six, but age-related maintenance adds up
The N57 single-turbo in the 30d is widely regarded as the most reliable of BMW's six-cylinder diesel family. Many engines exceed 200,000 km without major internal failure when maintained with shorter oil change intervals. The main ownership concerns are the EGR cooler fire safety recall (verify completion with the latest updated part), gradually developing oil leaks from multiple gasket points, and the very common steering rack knocking. The xDrive system adds the transfer case actuator as a known weak point. Most issues are well-documented and manageable with proper inspection, but neglected examples can accumulate significant repair bills.

Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler internal leak with fire risk (multiple rounds since 2018, updated 2022) Critical - verify completed
Water pump electrical connector fire risk (2013-2017 models) Verify completed
ISOFIX child seat bracket failure (built through April 2016) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2011-2017 models, multiple rounds) Verify completed
Vacuum pump brake assist failure (built Nov 2012-Jul 2013) Verify if applicable
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is the most critical and has been expanded several times since 2018. Even if a previous EGR repair was done, BMW may have since extended the recall scope to include an improved replacement part from a different supplier. The Takata airbag campaign is an ongoing global recall issued in multiple rounds.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on all used F25 X3 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models until 2026-2029
Extended warranty availability Available through BMW dealers and third-party providers
All F25 X3 models are now outside their original factory warranty. BMW introduced the 2+1 year warranty from November 2016, but only very late-production F25s (2017) would have benefited, and even those have now expired. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to cars built from 2014 onwards. Third-party extended warranties are available but typically exclude pre-existing conditions such as oil leaks, DPF issues, or timing chain noise.
