The N57 diesel engine is affected by a major recall for EGR cooler internal leaks. Coolant can leak from the cooler into the intake manifold, where it mixes with diesel soot. At high temperatures, this mixture can create smoldering particles, melt the plastic intake manifold, and in extreme cases cause an engine fire. BMW has expanded this recall three times (most recently in 2024), acknowledging that earlier repair attempts were inadequate. Cars built between March 2014 and May 2017 are most affected. Even if the recall shows as completed, the initial repairs used like-for-like components that may fail again. Always verify the latest recall status with BMW using the VIN, and confirm the updated redesigned EGR cooler was installed. If not covered by the recall, independent repair costs €800-1,200, while dealer repair can reach €1,500-2,000.

The N57 develops oil leaks from two primary locations as it ages. The valve cover gasket hardens and shrinks from heat cycling, typically starting to weep after 80,000-100,000 km. Oil drips down the cylinder head onto the exhaust manifold, producing a burning smell. The oil filter housing gasket, which seals the oil cooler assembly, is the second common failure point. On the N57, replacing the valve cover gasket requires removing the intake manifold and all six injectors, making it more labor-intensive than on petrol BMWs. Independent shops charge €400-600 for the valve cover and €200-400 for the oil filter housing. Dealer quotes can reach €800-1,200 for both together. VANOS solenoid O-rings can also contribute to oil weeping around the front of the engine.

Most X6 F16 models come with self-leveling rear air suspension as standard equipment. The rubber air springs gradually develop micro-cracks from UV exposure and temperature cycling, eventually leaking air. Symptoms include the rear sagging overnight or the compressor running constantly (audible buzzing from the rear of the vehicle). Individual air springs cost €150-300 for aftermarket or €400-600 OEM, with 2-3 hours labor per side. If the compressor burns out from overwork compensating for leaky springs, replacement costs €800-1,500 for the part alone. Replacing the entire rear air suspension with conventional coil springs is possible for around €800-1,200 and eliminates future air suspension concerns entirely.

The N57 inline-six uses a timing chain at the rear of the engine, between the block and the ZF 8HP gearbox. While significantly more reliable than the infamous N47 four-cylinder chain, the N57 chain and tensioner still wear over time. Stretching typically becomes detectable after 130,000-200,000 km through a brief rattle on cold start lasting 1-5 seconds as oil pressure builds. The rear placement means the engine must be separated from the gearbox (or removed from the vehicle) to access the chain, making this a 10-15 hour job. Parts cost €500-800 for chain, guides, and tensioner. Total repair at an independent specialist runs €2,500-3,500, while BMW dealers quote €3,500-4,500. The six-cylinder chain rarely snaps without warning, giving owners time to plan the repair.

The diesel particulate filter traps soot from combustion and periodically burns it off through regeneration, which requires sustained driving at highway speeds for 20-40 minutes. The X6 is a large, heavy SUV often used for urban school runs and short commutes where exhaust temperatures never reach the 600+ degrees needed for passive regeneration. When the DPF fills beyond a threshold, active regeneration attempts can fail, leading to warning lights, limp mode, and increased fuel consumption. Professional off-car cleaning costs €200-500 and can restore a clogged filter. If the DPF is damaged beyond cleaning, replacement runs €1,000-2,000 including labor. Regular highway driving of 30+ minutes once a week significantly reduces DPF problems.

The xDrive transfer case uses an electric actuator motor with small plastic gears to engage and disengage the clutch pack that splits torque between front and rear axles. These gears wear over time, especially on vehicles that see frequent low-speed maneuvering or tight parking. Symptoms include a 4x4 warning light, drivetrain malfunction message, or grinding noise during low-speed turns. Dealers often quote full transfer case replacement at €5,000-10,000, but in most cases only the actuator motor needs replacing at €800-1,500 including labor. An independent BMW specialist can diagnose whether the internal clutch pack is worn (requiring full replacement) or just the actuator motor gears have stripped. Always get a second opinion before agreeing to a full transfer case replacement.

Euro 6 compliance requires the N57 to use an AdBlue injection system with SCR catalyst. The NOx sensors mounted before and after the catalyst are the most common failure point, typically lasting 100,000-150,000 km. Symptoms include an AdBlue warning message, engine warning light, or a countdown warning that the engine will not restart after a set number of kilometers. A single NOx sensor replacement costs €300-600 at an independent shop. The SCR catalyst itself degrades over time, particularly on vehicles with frequent short trips where it does not reach operating temperature. Catalyst replacement runs €1,500-2,500. In cold climates, the AdBlue tank heater can also fail, triggering false low-level warnings in winter.

The N57 intake manifold contains swirl flaps that improve combustion efficiency at low RPM by creating turbulence in the intake air. Over time, carbon from the EGR system builds up on the flaps, causing them to stick or seize. In rare cases, the flap mounting hardware or the flap itself can break free and be ingested into the cylinder, causing catastrophic piston and valve damage. Preventive removal and blanking of the swirl flaps costs €200-400 at a specialist and has no meaningful impact on everyday driving or fuel economy. If engine damage occurs from ingested flap material, repair costs start at €3,000 and can reach €5,000 or more depending on the extent of damage. The N57 is less prone to this than the older M57, but it remains a known failure mode.
