Proven engine, but age-related maintenance is the primary cost factor
The M54B30 is widely considered one of BMW's most reliable inline-six engines, with documented examples exceeding 300,000 km. The main ownership costs at this age are not catastrophic mechanical failures but the accumulation of aging components: cooling system plastics, DISA and CCV valves, VANOS seals, gaskets, rubber bushings, and soft top wear on roadsters. The DISA valve deserves special attention as it is the one M54-specific issue that can cause serious engine damage if neglected, but preventive replacement is cheap and straightforward. A well-maintained Z3 3.0i with a refreshed cooling system, replaced DISA, and documented service history remains a rewarding classic roadster.
