The B48 oil filter housing is made of polycarbonate plastic and sits adjacent to the engine block where it is subjected to intense thermal cycling. Over time, the housing itself can crack or the gasket between the housing and block fails, causing coolant and oil to mix or leak externally. This is the most well-documented B48 weakness, with a US class-action lawsuit filed over premature failures. Many cases appear between 80,000 and 120,000 km. The repair involves replacing the housing, gasket, coolant vent hose, and single-use aluminum bolts. Independent shop cost runs around €800-1,200, while BMW dealer quotes typically reach €1,500-2,500 due to labor complexity. The B48TU variant in the G42 uses an updated housing, but long-term data from high-mileage CLAR-platform cars shows the issue persists.

The B48 uses several plastic coolant components (vent hose, thermostat housing, expansion tank connections) that undergo severe thermal cycling as the engine heats up quickly to meet emissions standards. These parts can become brittle and snap without warning, causing sudden coolant loss. If not caught immediately, driving with low coolant can damage the water pump seals and lead to overheating. The coolant vent hose near the oil filter housing is the most common failure point. Parts are inexpensive (€50-150), but labor to access them adds up. Proactive replacement during oil filter housing work is advisable.

The B48 valve cover gasket hardens and loses its seal over time, allowing oil to seep onto the exhaust manifold and create a burning oil smell. Unlike older BMW engines, the B48 valve cover repair requires removal of the fuel injectors and high-pressure fuel line, which needs special tools for injector removal and seal replacement. This adds significant labor time. Replacement parts cost around €150-250, but the labor-intensive access means total repair cost runs €600-900 at an independent shop and up to €1,400 at a BMW dealer. Many owners combine this with oil filter housing work to save on repeated labor.

The B48 uses an electric water pump with a plastic impeller that can crack, and the pump motor itself can fail. When this happens, the engine overheats rapidly with either a yellow or red temperature warning. Unlike mechanical pumps, there is no gradual deterioration. The B48TU variant in the G42 uses an improved pump design, and failures are less common on this generation than on earlier B48 applications. However, given the G42's age, most cars have not yet reached the typical failure mileage. Budget for this as a preventive replacement around 120,000-150,000 km.

Like all direct-injection turbocharged engines, the B48 accumulates carbon deposits on the intake valves because fuel is not sprayed over them to clean them. Symptoms include rough idle, hesitation on acceleration, and reduced fuel economy. The recommended solution is walnut blasting (media blasting the intake ports) approximately every 60,000-80,000 km. Cost at a specialist runs €300-500, while BMW dealers charge up to €700. This is borderline between scheduled maintenance and a risk item, as not all cars develop symptoms at the same mileage. Using quality fuel and occasional spirited driving can slow buildup.

BMW issued a global recall affecting approximately 575,000 vehicles built between July 2020 and July 2022, including the G42 2 Series Coupe. The starter relay's magnetic contacts wear prematurely, causing hard or no-start conditions. In rare cases, a short circuit can cause localized overheating and fire risk while driving. BMW's remedy is a free starter motor replacement, and in some cases the battery is also replaced. If this recall has already been completed, the cost is zero. If buying from a private seller who never completed the recall, BMW will still perform it free of charge. Verify completion with BMW using the VIN before purchase.

The G42 uses iDrive 7 (2022 models) or iDrive 8 (2023+), both of which have documented software stability issues. Symptoms include random screen reboots, Central Information Display flickering, Bluetooth paired devices being deleted after the car sits overnight, and CarPlay showing incorrect GPS position. Most of these are resolved through software updates at the dealer. A TSB (Technical Service Bulletin) addresses the CID flickering issue specifically. Hardware replacement is rarely needed, but if the screen unit itself fails out of warranty, replacement costs €200-300 for the part.
