Common Problems
Robust engine in a complex, heavy package
The M57 and N57 inline-six diesels are among BMW's most durable engines, with many examples exceeding 300,000 km when maintained with shorter oil change intervals (10,000-15,000 km rather than BMW's long-life 25,000 km recommendation). However, the X6's weight, xDrive system, and optional air suspension create multiple potential failure points beyond the engine itself. Most issues are well-documented and can be diagnosed during a thorough pre-purchase inspection. Preventive swirl flap blanking, regular oil changes, and avoiding exclusively short-trip driving significantly reduce long-term risk.

Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E71 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply to 2014 models until 2026
Extended warranty availability Available through BMW dealers and third-party providers
