The BMW 740d E65 was the first V8 diesel luxury sedan from BMW, pairing the M67 twin-turbo diesel with the controversial Bangle-era 7 Series. The M67 is a low-production, Europe-only engine that delivers strong torque with reasonable economy, but it sits inside one of the most electronically complex platforms BMW ever built. The E65 introduced iDrive, MOST bus networking, and optional air suspension, all of which are now aging and expensive to repair.· more· less

Common Problems
High-complexity platform with multiple expensive failure points
The M67 V8 diesel engine itself is a reasonably robust unit with no known catastrophic design flaws, and well-maintained examples have reached 300,000+ km. However, the E65 platform surrounding it is one of BMW's most electronically complex designs. The MOST bus, iDrive, Dynamic Drive, optional air suspension, and numerous control modules all age poorly and are expensive to diagnose and repair. Parts for the M67 are rarer and more expensive than for the common N57 inline-6 diesel. A pre-purchase inspection by a BMW specialist with ISTA diagnostics is essential. Budget for ongoing electronic and suspension maintenance.
