The coupe variant of the F30 3 Series, sharing platform, drivetrains, and suspension. Two different petrol engines were fitted: pre-2016 cars use the N20 (184 hp), while from 2016 the B48 took over with 184 hp and slightly more torque. This engine distinction matters for reliability: the N20 has a well-documented timing chain guide defect on earlier production units, while the B48 resolved the chain issue but introduced coolant system weak points. Both pair with BMW's excellent ZF 8-speed automatic.· more· less

Common Problems
Engine generation determines risk profile
The 420i F32 spans two engine generations with distinctly different reliability profiles. Pre-2016 N20 models carry the timing chain guide risk as their most serious concern, alongside the usual BMW oil and coolant leak tendencies. Post-2016 B48 models resolved the timing chain issue but introduced coolant vent line and oil filter housing cracking concerns. Both engines share common BMW four-cylinder weak points: electric water pump, oil gasket deterioration, and turbo wastegate wear. With proactive maintenance and shorter oil change intervals than BMW recommends, both engines can deliver reliable service well beyond 150,000 km.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Coolant pump electrical connector short-circuit risk (2012-2018 production, recall 24V-608) Verify completed
Crankshaft position sensor firmware defect causing engine stalling (select May-June 2018 production) Verify if applicable
Head airbag inflator weld joint failure (2014 model year coupes) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (various model years) Verify with VIN
B48 coolant vent line service action (2016-2019 B48 models, SI B17 01 21) Verify if applicable
Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and service actions have been completed. The coolant pump connector recall (24V-608) is particularly important as it affects a wide production range.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on most used cars
N20 timing chain extended warranty 7 years / 120,000 km (expired on most cars)
Rust perforation warranty 12 years from first registration
Most BMW 420i F32 models are now outside their original factory warranty and the N20 timing chain extended warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to later production cars. BMW dealers offer extended warranty packages for used cars.
