2019-present · B47D20 2.0L turbodiesel (150 hp / 350 Nm)

The entry-level diesel in BMW's seventh-generation 3 Series, popular in Europe for its blend of efficiency and premium feel. The detuned B47 produces 150 hp and 350 Nm, paired exclusively with the ZF 8-speed automatic. Pre-LCI cars (2019-2022) lack the 48V mild hybrid system added later, while the LCI (from mid-2022) brings the curved display and mild hybrid across all diesels. The same CLAR platform and B47 engine family as the 320d, but lower turbo pressure and modest output mean slightly less mechanical stress.

Known Issues most common first
EGR valve and cooler fouling €400 - 2,500
Carbon buildup clogs EGR valve; cooler can leak coolant into exhaust side, posing fire risk · more· less
All B47 diesels are susceptible to EGR problems, and the 318d is no exception. The EGR valve accumulates carbon deposits over time, particularly on cars driven gently or on short trips. A stuck valve causes hesitation, higher fuel consumption, and check engine codes. The EGR cooler can leak internally, allowing coolant to mix with soot-laden exhaust gas. BMW issued a recall campaign (affecting B47 engines from 2013-2018 and extended to some later builds) because in severe cases the deposits can ignite, melting the intake manifold. EGR valve replacement alone costs €200-400 at an independent shop. If the intake manifold is damaged, costs rise to €1,500-2,500 including manifold replacement. Decoking the entire intake system with walnut blasting (€400-600) is advisable around 100,000 km. The 318d's lower boost and exhaust temperatures compared to the 320d may slow carbon buildup slightly, but the system is fundamentally the same.
DPF clogging from short-trip driving €400 - 3,500
Diesel particulate filter clogs when regeneration cycles cannot complete, mainly on urban-only cars · more· less
The DPF needs regular driving at sustained speeds (ideally 30+ minutes above 80 km/h) to complete passive regeneration. Cars used predominantly for short urban trips accumulate soot faster than it can burn off. Below about 70% soot loading, a forced regeneration via diagnostic tool at a workshop can clear the blockage (€150-400). Above 85% loading, the DPF must be professionally cleaned (€400-800) or, in extreme cases, replaced. A new OEM DPF costs €2,500-3,500 fitted. Aftermarket alternatives are available from around €1,200 installed. Always ask about the previous owner's driving pattern. Cars with a history of motorway commuting typically have no DPF issues.
Folding mirror electronics failure €300 - 800
Moisture ingress shorts the mirror control module, preventing folding or unfolding · more· less
This is a well-documented G20-wide issue, not specific to the 318d. Moisture enters the mirror electronics module through the cable routing area, causing a short circuit. Service technicians on forums report seeing multiple cars per week with this fault. Typically the passenger side fails first, though both can be affected. In some cases the door master controller is also impacted, disabling window controls and the central locking. Under warranty, BMW replaces the mirror free of charge. Out of warranty, expect €300-500 per mirror at an independent specialist. Aftermarket mirror assemblies are a cheaper alternative. Testing is simple: lock and unlock the car several times and check both mirrors fold and unfold reliably.
Transmission oil cooler internal leak €800 - 3,000
Internal cooler failure mixes coolant with transmission fluid, risking gearbox damage · more· less
The ZF 8HP transmission's oil cooler (heat exchanger) can fail internally, allowing coolant and ATF to cross-contaminate. Coolant in the gearbox causes harsh shifting, slipping, and eventually permanent transmission damage if not caught early. Symptoms include an unusual color or milky appearance in the coolant expansion tank, a burning smell from the transmission area, and the transmission warning light. The repair involves replacing the cooler, flushing both the cooling and transmission systems, and sometimes replacing the water pump. Parts and labor run €800-1,500 at an independent specialist. If the contamination is caught late and the transmission is damaged, costs can reach €2,500-3,000. ZF recommends a transmission fluid change every 100,000 km despite BMW's claim it is filled for life.
Valve cover gasket oil leak €350 - 700
Gasket hardens and begins seeping oil, typically after 60,000-80,000 km · more· less
The B47 valve cover gasket degrades with heat cycling and begins to leak oil. This is a common BMW diesel wear pattern rather than a design defect. Symptoms include oil streaks on the engine cover, a burning smell when oil drips onto hot exhaust components, and oil pooling under the car. The gasket itself costs €50-100; labor runs €250-500 depending on access and workshop rates. Independent shops typically charge €350-500 total, while BMW dealers quote €500-700. Not urgent in the early stages, but oil on the exhaust manifold can become a fire hazard, so it should not be ignored indefinitely.
Starter motor overheating (recall) €0 - 500
Internal wear in the starter's magnetic switch can cause overheating, with a potential fire risk · more· less
BMW issued a recall in 2025-2026 affecting 2021-2024 model year 3 Series vehicles (among others). A high number of starting operations can lead to increased wear in the magnetic switch inside the starter motor, which may cause it to overheat and, in extreme cases, pose a fire risk. BMW's interim advice was to not leave affected cars running unattended after starting. The recall remedy is a free starter motor replacement (and in some cases battery replacement) at BMW dealers. For pre-recall cars or vehicles bought without completed recall work, an aftermarket starter replacement costs €300-500. Verify recall completion with BMW using the VIN.
Well-proven diesel, but emissions system needs active management
The 318d shares the B47 engine family with the 320d and is widely considered a reliable diesel when maintained properly. The lower output (150 hp vs 190 hp) means less mechanical stress on the turbo and exhaust side. However, the EGR and DPF systems need regular motorway driving to stay healthy, and the folding mirror electronics are a persistent G20 platform weakness. Keep oil change intervals shorter than BMW's CBS recommendation (every 10,000 km rather than 15,000-20,000 km), verify EGR cooler recall status, and inspect transmission fluid condition on higher-mileage cars.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
+ 3 more checksShow less
  • Ask about typical driving pattern
Cars used mainly for short urban trips are at higher risk of DPF and EGR problems. A motorway commuter history is ideal for diesel reliability.
  • Check for oil leaks around valve cover
Look for oil residue on the engine cover and around the valve cover perimeter. Minor seepage is common after 60,000 km but should be addressed.
  • Verify starter motor recall (2021-2024 models)
Check with BMW whether the starter motor recall applies to this specific car and whether the replacement has been completed.
