BMW X5 xDrive30d F15

2013-2018Last reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2013-2018 · 3.0L N57 inline-6 turbodiesel (258 hp) single turbo, ZF 8HP automatic, xDrive AWD

The third-generation X5 refined the formula with a lighter body, improved refinement, and the proven N57 inline-six turbodiesel. The xDrive30d is the volume seller in Europe, combining strong motorway performance with 6-8 l/100 km economy. The N57 single turbo is considered the most reliable of the F15 diesel options (30d/40d/M50d), and the ZF 8HP automatic is well-regarded. Major concerns centre on the EGR cooler fire risk recall, oil leaks from multiple gasket points, and transfer case wear on higher-mileage examples.

Proven N57 single-turbo diesel Excellent motorway comfort and economy
EGR cooler fire risk (recall) Multiple oil leak points as it ages
Buy if: You want a powerful, refined diesel SUV for long-distance use and can verify all EGR cooler recalls are completed and service history is thorough.
Avoid if: You mainly do short urban trips (DPF and EGR issues), cannot verify recall status, or want low-maintenance ownership.

Common Problems
Proven engine, but BMW diesel SUV complexity requires proactive maintenance
The N57 single-turbo inline-six in the xDrive30d is widely considered the most reliable F15 diesel variant and can reach well beyond 250,000 km with proper care. The ZF 8HP gearbox is also a strong point. However, the F15 X5 is a complex vehicle with xDrive, optional air suspension, and emission control systems that all require attention. The EGR cooler recall is the most critical item to verify before purchase. Oil leaks from multiple gasket points are common on cars beyond 100,000 km and should be expected rather than feared. Transfer case maintenance is often neglected and can become expensive if ignored. Cars with complete specialist service history and regular motorway use are the best candidates.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler internal leak and fire risk (2013-2017 diesel models, multiple campaigns: 2018 and 2021) Critical - verify completed with latest part
High-pressure fuel pump failure risk (select 2014-2018 diesel models) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (primarily E70 generation, verify F15 VIN individually) Verify with VIN
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is particularly critical: BMW issued an initial recall in 2018 (18V-755) but the replacement parts also proved defective, leading to an updated recall in 2021 (21V-907) with parts from a new supplier. Verify that the latest EGR cooler has been fitted, not just that a recall was performed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all F15 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014-2018 models
Extended warranty options BMW Guarantee or third-party available
All F15 X5 models are outside their original 2-year factory warranty. BMW offered a 2+1 year warranty from November 2016 on new cars, so late 2016-2018 models may have had 3 years originally. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active on newer examples. Third-party warranties are available but typically exclude pre-existing conditions. Budget for repairs out of pocket.

BMW X5 E70 xDrive30d 2007-2013 Previous generation with M57/N57 engines. Pre-LCI has swirl flap ingestion risk. Transfer case and oil leak issues are similar but worsened by age. Audi Q7 3.0 TDI (4L) 2006-2015 Similar running costs and complexity. Q7 adds third row but is heavier. Air suspension and timing chain issues are comparable. Volvo XC90 II D5 2015-2024 Newer platform with 4-cylinder diesel. PowerPulse hose failures are the main concern. Lower engine complexity but higher purchase price. BMW 530d F10 2010-2016 Same N57 engine in a sedan. Identical EGR and timing chain risk profile but no transfer case or air suspension to worry about. Volkswagen Touareg Mk2 3.0 TDI 2010-2018 Similar size and segment. V6 diesel with its own timing chain and EGR concerns. Air suspension issues are comparable. Aisin gearbox is very reliable.
