BMW 125i F20

2012-2019Last reviewed: April 2026 · How this report is builtApril 2026

2012-2019 · 2.0 N20 turbo (218 hp, pre-LCI) / 2.0 B48 turbo (224 hp, LCI)

The mid-range performance option in BMW's rear-wheel-drive hatchback lineup. Pre-LCI models (2012-2015) use the N20 2.0-litre turbo four-cylinder, while the 2016 facelift brought the improved B48 engine with a modest power increase to 224 hp. The N20 has a well-documented timing chain guide weakness on early production cars, while the B48 is proving significantly more robust. Both engines are paired with either a 6-speed manual or the excellent ZF 8-speed automatic.

Engaging rear-wheel-drive handling Strong 218-224 hp from a compact turbo four
N20 timing chain guide weakness Oil leaks widespread on both engines
Buy if: You want a sporty rear-wheel-drive hatchback with strong performance and can find a post-2015 B48 model or a pre-2015 N20 with documented timing chain service.
Avoid if: You hear cold-start rattling on a pre-LCI N20, the service history is incomplete, or the car has visible oil leaks around the valve cover.

Common Problems
Engine choice matters: N20 needs more attention than B48
The BMW 125i F20's reliability depends heavily on which engine it has. Pre-LCI cars with the N20 (2012-2015) require close attention to the timing chain guides, turbo wastegate, and oil leaks. LCI models with the B48 (2016-2019) are significantly more robust, with fewer catastrophic failure points. Regardless of engine, the steering rack knocking, cooling system, and oil leaks affect many F20s. With diligent maintenance — shorter oil change intervals than BMW recommends, proactive cooling system monitoring, and attention to cold-start sounds — the 125i can provide reliable and engaging ownership.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Takata airbag inflator (2012-2017 production, multiple phases) Verify completed
VANOS housing bolts loosening (early N20 production 2011-2012) Verify completed
Battery cable connection to power distribution box (early production to Sep 2011) Verify completed
Clutch cover bolt loosening (manual transmission models) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The Takata airbag recall is particularly important and has been expanded multiple times — confirm even if a previous check showed clear.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used F20 125i models
Extended warranty (2+1, from Nov 2016) 3 years total on late-production LCI models — likely expired
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models — verify with BMW
All BMW 125i F20 models are outside their original factory warranty. BMW's 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be valid on later production cars. Third-party extended warranties are available but many exclude N20 timing chain issues as a known defect.

↔ Also consider

BMW 118i F20 2011-2019 Same platform with less power. N13 engine has its own timing chain issues. Lower running costs but also less performance and a different engine character. Audi A3 1.4 TFSI 8V 2012-2020 Front-wheel-drive competitor with EA211 engine. Generally more reliable but DQ200 dry-clutch DSG is problematic. Less sporty handling than the rear-drive BMW. Volkswagen Golf Mk7 1.4 TSI 2012-2020 More practical rival with similar power. EA211 engine is reliable but DQ200 DSG issues apply. Better interior space, less driving engagement. BMW 120d F20 2011-2019 Same platform with N47/B47 diesel. More torque and economy but N47 has worse timing chain risk (rear-mounted chain). DPF and EGR add diesel-specific concerns. Mercedes-Benz A200 W176 2012-2018 Front-wheel-drive premium rival with M270 turbo engine. Similar reliability tier. 7G-DCT gearbox and water ingress are its specific weak points.
