The entry-level diesel in the F10 5 Series, introduced in 2013 as part of the LCI facelift. The 518d pairs the same 2.0-litre four-cylinder diesel found in the 520d with a lower state of tune: 143 hp with the N47 engine (2013-2014) or 150 hp with the B47 (2014-2016). In practice, the 518d shares virtually all reliability characteristics with the 520d. The key buying decision is identifying whether the car has the N47 or B47 engine, as this fundamentally changes the ownership risk profile.· more· less

Common Problems
Engine variant is the deciding factor
The BMW 518d F10 straddles two different reliability profiles depending on the engine fitted. The 2013-2014 cars with the N47 engine carry the well-documented timing chain risk and swirl flap concerns, though these are later-production N47 units with improved components compared to the pre-2011 versions. The 2014-2016 cars with the B47 engine are significantly more reliable, with the timing chain relocated to the front and revised intake components. Both engine variants share the EGR cooler fire recall (verify completion before any purchase), DPF sensitivity to short-trip driving, and the common steering rack knocking issue. The ZF 8-speed automatic is generally dependable with regular fluid changes. The 518d's lower power output means it is often chosen by urban commuters, which ironically increases the risk of DPF and EGR problems. With regular motorway use and proper maintenance, the B47 518d is a capable and affordable long-distance car.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler leak with fire risk (multiple campaigns: 2018, 2019, 2021, 2024 — affects N47 and B47 diesel models) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (selected production periods, verify with VIN) Verify with VIN
Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls and service campaigns have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is the most critical as it addresses a fire risk. BMW has expanded this recall multiple times since 2018, so even if a previous repair was done, verify that the latest updated part has been fitted.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all F10 518d models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014-2016 models until 2026-2028
EGR cooler recall Free repair regardless of warranty status
All F10 518d models are now outside their original 2-year factory warranty. BMW introduced the 2+1 year warranty from November 2016, but since the 518d F10 was discontinued by then, no 518d benefited from the extended scheme. Recall-related repairs (EGR cooler) are performed free of charge regardless of warranty status. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still apply to 2014-2016 models.

↔ Also consider

BMW 520d F10
BMW 520d F10 2010-2017
Same N47/B47 engine at higher output. Identical timing chain and EGR risks. Wider production range means more pre-LCI N47 cars with worse chain issues.
Audi A6 C7 2.0 TDI
Audi A6 C7 2.0 TDI 2011-2018
Direct segment competitor. EA189/EA288 diesel is generally more reliable than the N47. Multitronic CVT gearbox is the main weak point on pre-2014 FWD autos.
Mercedes-Benz C220d W205
Mercedes-Benz C220d W205 2014-2021
Smaller class but similar price bracket used. NOx sensor failures are widespread. OM651 timing chain needs monitoring on pre-2018 cars.
BMW 525d F10
BMW 525d F10 2010-2017
Higher-output variant that also used N47 and N57 engines. Similar risk profile but early cars had the inline-six, which avoids the N47 timing chain issue.
Volkswagen Passat B8 2.0 TDI
Volkswagen Passat B8 2.0 TDI 2014-2023
More reliable EA288 diesel with no timing chain concerns. AdBlue system failures are the main headache. Less refined but cheaper to maintain.
