The entry-level E30 3 Series, powered by BMW's M40B16 four-cylinder. Less glamorous than the six-cylinder 325i, the 316i was the practical choice for everyday driving in the late 1980s and early 1990s. The M40 engine is mechanically straightforward and can reach 250,000-300,000 km with disciplined maintenance, but its camshaft lubrication design is a known weakness. At 30+ years old, the biggest ownership concerns are structural rust, perished rubber and plastic components, and aging electrical connections rather than fundamental mechanical failure.· more· less

Common Problems
Mechanically simple but age demands constant attention
The M40B16 engine is fundamentally durable and can exceed 250,000 km when the oil spray bar is kept clear and the timing belt is changed on schedule. The main ownership risks come from the car's age rather than inherent design flaws: rust, perished rubber components, and degraded electrical connections affect every surviving E30. Buying a well-maintained example with solid bodywork is far more important than any individual mechanical issue. Budget for a full cooling system refresh and electrical relay replacement on any newly purchased E30, regardless of what the seller claims.
