2009-2015 · 2.0d N47D20C (143 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel

BMW's first compact SUV, based on the rear-wheel-drive E90 3 Series platform. The sDrive18d is the entry-level diesel with 143 hp from the N47D20C engine, offering relaxed cruising and good fuel economy around 5.5 l/100 km. Unlike the xDrive models, there is no transfer case to maintain, which simplifies ownership. Build quality is solid and parts availability is excellent thanks to shared components with the 1 and 3 Series.

Rear-wheel-drive handling dynamics Efficient diesel, no xDrive complexity
N47 timing chain is a known risk EGR cooler recall affects many cars
Buy if: You want a practical rear-wheel-drive compact SUV with diesel economy and can verify timing chain condition and EGR recall status before purchase.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and EGR clogging) or the car has cold-start timing chain rattle.

Common Problems
N47 engine needs monitoring, but manageable with proper maintenance
The X1 E84 sDrive18d shares its mechanicals with the proven E90 3 Series. Without the xDrive system, the drivetrain is simpler than the xDrive20d. The N47 timing chain reputation is the primary concern, though post-2011 revised components and short oil change intervals reduce the failure rate significantly. The EGR cooler recall should be verified before any purchase. Cars that have been well-maintained with 10,000-15,000 km oil changes and regular motorway driving tend to be dependable.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler potential fire risk (N47 diesel, various production dates 2009-2015) Verify completed with BMW
Takata airbag inflator (2012-2015 models) Verify completed
Brake vacuum pump seal (certain 2009-2014 models) Verify completed
Battery positive cable connector (August 2009 - June 2011 production) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is particularly critical as it addresses a potential fire risk and has been expanded multiple times. The Takata airbag recall affects 2012-2015 production vehicles.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E84 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014-2015 models
EGR cooler recall Free repair regardless of age or mileage
All E84 X1 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. BMW offered a 2+1 warranty extension from November 2016 onwards, but this does not apply retroactively to E84 production. The EGR cooler recall repair is free at any BMW dealer regardless of warranty status.

↔ Also consider

BMW X1 xDrive20d E84 2009-2015 Same N47 engine at 177 hp with AWD. Adds transfer case failure risk but otherwise identical issues. Higher running costs due to xDrive maintenance. Volkswagen Tiguan Mk1 2.0 TDI 2007-2016 Pre-2010 models have a dangerous oil pump hex drive defect. Post-Dieselgate EGR issues are common. Timing belt instead of chain reduces catastrophic risk. Mercedes-Benz GLA 220 CDI X156 2014-2020 OM651 diesel also has a rear-mounted timing chain. 7G-DCT dual-clutch gearbox adds an expensive failure point the X1 avoids with its conventional gearbox. BMW X1 F48 sDrive18d 2015-2022 Successor on a front-wheel-drive platform. B47 diesel has chain at front, eliminating the N47's worst weakness. More refined but loses the rear-drive character. BMW 120d F20 2011-2019 Same N47 engine in a lower, sportier body. Identical timing chain and EGR concerns. Hatchback format is more practical for some, less SUV-like ride.
