BMW's first compact SUV, based on the rear-wheel-drive E90 3 Series platform. The sDrive18d is the entry-level diesel with 143 hp from the N47D20C engine, offering relaxed cruising and good fuel economy around 5.5 l/100 km. Unlike the xDrive models, there is no transfer case to maintain, which simplifies ownership. Build quality is solid and parts availability is excellent thanks to shared components with the 1 and 3 Series.

N47 timing chain is a known risk
EGR cooler recall affects many cars
Buy if: You want a practical rear-wheel-drive compact SUV with diesel economy and can verify timing chain condition and EGR recall status before purchase.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and EGR clogging) or the car has cold-start timing chain rattle.

Common Problems
Rear-mounted timing chain stretches, causing cold-start rattle and risking catastrophic engine damage · more· less
The N47D20C diesel has its timing chain at the rear of the engine (gearbox side), making replacement extremely labour-intensive as the gearbox must be removed. Pre-September 2009 engines are most vulnerable, but all N47 variants can be affected. The chain and tensioner wear over time, causing a distinctive metallic rattle on cold start that worsens progressively. If the chain jumps or snaps, valve-to-piston contact destroys the engine. BMW revised the chain components in mid-2009 and again in 2011, which reduced the failure rate but did not eliminate it entirely. Preventive replacement at a specialist costs approximately 1,500-2,200 euros. If the chain has already caused engine damage, costs escalate to 3,500-5,000 euros for engine rebuild or replacement. Changing oil every 10,000-15,000 km rather than BMW's extended long-life interval significantly reduces risk. Post-2014 E84 models with the B47 engine relocated the chain to the front and are not affected.
EGR cooler can leak coolant internally, creating a potential fire risk · more· less
BMW issued a major recall affecting approximately 800,000 diesel vehicles worldwide due to defective EGR coolers. The N47-equipped X1 E84 is included in the affected models. Coolant can escape from the cooler and combine with diesel soot at high temperatures, potentially causing the intake manifold to melt and, in rare cases, vehicle fires. The recall has been expanded multiple times since 2018. BMW acknowledged that earlier corrective actions were inadequate, and an optimized cooler from a different supplier has only been used since 2022. The recall repair is free at BMW dealers, but many cars may not have had it completed yet. Verify recall status with BMW using the VIN before purchase. If the recall has been performed, cost is zero. If repair is needed outside the recall window, EGR cooler replacement costs 600-1,500 euros at an independent workshop.
Plastic swirl flaps become brittle and can break, risking limp mode or engine ingestion damage · more· less
The N47 intake manifold contains plastic swirl flaps that optimise airflow at different engine speeds. Over time, heat cycling and vibration cause the plastic to become brittle. The flap actuator linkages wear, causing the motor to overshoot its set parameters and triggering a fault code with limp mode. In the worst case, broken flap material can enter a cylinder, damaging pistons and valves. Actuator repair alone costs 150-350 euros at a specialist, while a new intake manifold runs 850-1,100 euros fitted. Many owners opt for preventive blanking with aluminium plates at around 100-200 euros total, which removes the risk entirely with no noticeable performance loss. Failure typically occurs between 80,000 and 150,000 km.
Diesel particulate filter blocks when the car rarely reaches sustained motorway speeds · more· less
The DPF requires temperatures above 600 degrees to regenerate, which typically requires 20-30 minutes of sustained driving at 60+ km/h. Cars used predominantly for short urban trips accumulate soot faster than the system can clear it. Failed regeneration cycles dump unburnt fuel into the engine oil, raising the oil level and diluting it. Professional forced regeneration costs 100-250 euros if performed early. DPF cleaning runs 350-600 euros. Full DPF replacement costs 1,200-2,000 euros including fitting. Check the engine oil level before buying: if significantly above the maximum mark, diesel has been contaminating the oil from failed regenerations. Cars used regularly on motorways rarely experience this issue.
Electronic wastegate actuator seizes from carbon buildup, causing limp mode · more· less
The electronic turbo wastegate actuator on the N47 can seize due to carbon deposits and heat degradation, particularly on gently driven cars or those used mostly in town. When stuck open, the turbo produces insufficient boost causing sluggish acceleration. When stuck closed, over-boost occurs and triggers limp mode. BMW does not sell the actuator separately, so their quote typically includes full turbo replacement at 1,500-2,000 euros. Specialist actuator repair or rebuild services are available for 400-600 euros. Regular motorway driving and occasional spirited use helps keep the actuator free. BMW issued a Technical Service Bulletin (SI B11 14 17) acknowledging this issue on E84 models produced from July 2012 to February 2015.
Rubber gasket hardens from heat cycling, causing oil seepage · more· less
The oil filter housing gasket is a common leak point on the N47 engine, typically appearing between 80,000 and 150,000 km as the rubber gasket hardens from heat cycling. Oil seeps from the housing and can drip onto hot exhaust components, creating a burning oil smell. The gasket itself costs under 20 euros, but labour runs 2-4 hours due to limited access. Independent shops charge 300-400 euros, BMW dealers 450-600 euros. Often combined with valve cover gasket replacement to save on repeated labour.
N47 engine needs monitoring, but manageable with proper maintenance
The X1 E84 sDrive18d shares its mechanicals with the proven E90 3 Series. Without the xDrive system, the drivetrain is simpler than the xDrive20d. The N47 timing chain reputation is the primary concern, though post-2011 revised components and short oil change intervals reduce the failure rate significantly. The EGR cooler recall should be verified before any purchase. Cars that have been well-maintained with 10,000-15,000 km oil changes and regular motorway driving tend to be dependable.
