The fourth-generation X3 on the updated CLAR platform brings a fully redesigned interior with iDrive 9 and a 48V mild-hybrid system across the petrol range. The xDrive20 (formerly xDrive20i) is the entry-level petrol variant for Europe, pairing the familiar B48 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo with a belt-driven starter-generator for smoother stop-start behaviour and modest efficiency gains. BMW's xDrive all-wheel drive and the proven ZF 8-speed Steptronic automatic complete the drivetrain.· more· less

Common Problems
Proven engine, but first-generation platform with software growing pains
The B48 engine paired with the ZF 8-speed automatic is a well-known and generally reliable drivetrain combination with millions of units in service. The main mechanical concerns are the polycarbonate oil filter housing and the coolant system plastics, both of which are documented B48 issues that tend to appear at higher mileages. The G45-specific challenges are predominantly software-related: iDrive 9 is still being refined through frequent OTA updates, and the steering recall needs to be verified. The 48V mild hybrid system adds a layer of complexity with limited long-term data. Overall, the mechanical foundation is solid, but buyers should expect ongoing software updates during the early years of ownership.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Steering system software: unintended steering wheel movement while stationary (2025-2026 X3, built Aug 2024 - Oct 2025) Critical - verify completed
ISG battery cable connection: loose positive cable may overheat and cause power loss (2025 X3 30 xDrive, Nov 2024 - Mar 2025 production) Verify if applicable
Rear brake hose: improper crimping may cause brake fluid leak and ABS/DSC failure (192 units, 2025 X3 30/M50, Feb 6-7 2025 production) Verify if applicable
Front passenger airbag: fabric damaged during transit between suppliers (7 units, 2025 X3) Verify if applicable
The G45 X3 has accumulated several recalls in its first production year, which is not unusual for a new generation vehicle. The steering software recall is the most widespread and should be confirmed on every car. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify the status of all applicable recalls.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years, no km limit) Active on most G45 models (production from late 2024)
48V battery and hybrid components Covered under standard 3-year warranty
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all G45 models
BMW Extended Warranty Available through BMW dealers after factory warranty expires
Most G45 X3 models are still within their original 3-year factory warranty (BMW 2+1 programme, in effect since November 2016). Given the number of first-year recalls and ongoing software updates, buying a car still under warranty is strongly advisable. Consider purchasing BMW's extended warranty before the factory coverage expires.
