Most G05 X5s in Europe were optioned with 2-axle air suspension. Common failure points include air spring perforations (rubber degradation, micro-cracks), compressor wear from frequent self-leveling cycles, and valve block leaks. Symptoms: car sits low overnight, 'Check Air Suspension' warning, compressor running constantly. A single rear air spring runs €450-800 fitted; full compressor replacement is €1,500-2,500 at dealer; severe cases needing multiple components can exceed €3,500. The Euro 6d emission system uses two NOx sensors, a particulate sensor, AdBlue dosing pump, and SCR catalyst. NOx sensors are the most common failure (typically 80,000-150,000 km), often appearing as 'Engine emission system fault' warnings with a no-start countdown that can reach zero. A single OEM NOx sensor is €350-450 fitted; AdBlue pump replacement is €800-1,200; full SCR catalyst replacement runs €1,500+. Using only BMW-spec AdBlue and avoiding letting the tank run dry significantly reduces sensor failure rates.

The B57's DPF needs sustained driving above 70-80 km/h for passive regeneration. Cars used predominantly in urban traffic or on short commutes can suffer DPF blockage as early as 60,000 km. Symptoms: orange DPF warning light, limp mode, engine derate. A forced regen at a specialist costs €100-250; specialist DPF cleaning runs €400-700; full DPF replacement at dealer can hit €2,500. The MHEV's start-stop and electric assist on short trips can ironically worsen DPF loading. A 30-minute highway run weekly is the recommended preventive measure.

While the G05 received the optimized EGR cooler design from 2022 onward, earlier 2020-2021 cars share design concerns with the broader B57 fleet. Symptoms include sweet smell, low coolant warnings, and white exhaust smoke (severe cases). EGR cooler replacement runs €900-1,400; electric water pump replacement (typical 80,000-120,000 km) is €700-1,000; thermostat housing assembly is €500-800. The widely publicized 2018-2024 EGR cooler recall affected primarily F15/G30 vehicles; verify with VIN whether the G05 is included.

The 48V mild hybrid system, present on all xDrive40d builds from 2020, adds a belt-driven starter-generator and lithium-ion 48V battery. Reported issues include 48V battery degradation (the small Li-ion pack near the rear axle can fail), starter-generator clutch wear, and software glitches that disable stop-start function. 48V battery replacement runs €700-1,200; starter-generator can reach €2,500-3,000 at dealer including labor. Most owners encounter only software-related faults curable via update.

Some 2020-2021 G05 vehicles were filled with incorrect factory fluid for the ATC45L transfer case, causing acceleration shudder, jerking, or warning lights. BMW issued TSB SI B27 02 20 covering a fluid drain-and-fill (€300-500 at specialist). If the fluid issue went unaddressed for high mileage, transfer case actuator or full unit replacement can run €2,000-2,500. The G-series transfer case design is significantly more reliable than the F15 generation's known-failure unit.

Early G05 cars with iDrive 7 (2019-2021 builds) had widespread reports of screen freezes, slow boot times, Apple CarPlay disconnects, and head-up display flickering. Most issues are software-related and resolved by free dealer software updates or a hard reset (volume knob hold for 20-30 seconds). A small minority required head-unit replacement (out-of-warranty cost €1,500+, typically goodwill-covered). Newer LCI models with iDrive 8 reportedly have better stability.

The B57's twin-turbo arrangement is generally durable, with most failures appearing past 150,000 km.
