BMW 320i E90

2005-2011Last reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2005-2011 · 2.0L N46B20 (150 hp) 4-cylinder naturally aspirated petrol

The E90 320i is the entry-level petrol in the fifth-generation 3 Series, powered by the 2.0-litre N46B20 four-cylinder producing 150 hp. Sold across Europe from 2005 to 2007 in pre-LCI form (some markets continued the N46 into the LCI phase where fuel quality prevented use of the N43 replacement). It offers a decent balance of BMW driving dynamics and reasonable fuel economy, though the N46 engine has a mixed reliability reputation compared to BMW's inline-six family.

Affordable BMW 3 Series ownership Good parts availability, large community
N46 Valvetronic system failure-prone Multiple oil leak points with age
Buy if: You want an affordable rear-wheel-drive BMW and can find one with documented service history and no cold-start rattle.
Avoid if: You hear timing chain rattle on cold start, the service history is incomplete, or you need a trouble-free daily driver on a tight budget.
Expected Annual Maintenance Costs

Common Problems
Moderate reliability, several known weak points
The N46 engine is functional but not among BMW's best. The Valvetronic system, timing chain tensioner, and multiple oil leak points are well-documented problem areas. With proactive maintenance and prompt attention to warning signs (especially cold-start rattle and oil leaks), the 320i E90 can provide reasonable service beyond 200,000 km. However, deferred maintenance quickly escalates costs. Manual gearbox models are more reliable overall.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Heater blower fan regulator fire risk (July 2004 - June 2012 production) Critical - verify completed
Battery cable connector degradation causing engine cutout (March 2007 - October 2011) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (if steering wheel was replaced with aftermarket/M wheel) Verify with BMW using VIN
The heater blower fan regulator recall is particularly important as it poses a fire risk even when parked. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E90 320i models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all pre-2014 production
All BMW E90 320i models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. Third-party extended warranties are available but check exclusions carefully, as pre-existing oil leaks and Valvetronic issues are often excluded.

↔ Also consider

BMW 330i E90 2005-2011 Same platform with smoother inline-6. N52 is more reliable than the N46 but the N53 variant has expensive injector issues. Higher purchase price. Mercedes-Benz C200 W204 2007-2014 Direct competitor. M271 engine also has timing chain and oil leak concerns. Electronic steering lock failures add another costly risk. Audi A4 2.0 TFSI B8 2008-2015 Newer, more refined. Pre-2013 models have oil consumption and timing chain tensioner issues. Multitronic CVT on automatics is unreliable. BMW 320i E46 1998-2005 Previous generation with proven inline-6 engine. Generally more reliable mechanically but older, so cooling system plastics and subframe need checking. BMW 320i E36 1991-1999 Simpler M50/M52 inline-6 with fewer electronic systems. More rust-prone but the engine family is extremely durable.
