2014-2021 · 2.0 B47/N47 (141-148 hp) 4-cylinder turbodiesel

The entry-level diesel in BMW's compact rear-wheel-drive coupe. Early cars (2014) use the N47 engine, but the majority have the improved B47 from 2015 onwards with 148 hp. The lower power output compared to the 220d puts less stress on the turbo and drivetrain, making it a sensible choice for daily commuting with good fuel economy and BMW's characteristic handling balance.

Rear-wheel-drive handling balance Frugal diesel with low running costs
EGR cooler recall affects all years DPF clogs on short-trip driving
Buy if: You want an efficient diesel coupe with BMW dynamics and can verify the EGR cooler recall has been completed.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF clogging risk) or are looking at a 2014 car with the older N47 engine.

Common Problems
Reliable diesel coupe when maintained, but EGR recall is critical
The BMW 218d F22 with the B47 engine (2015 onwards) is a solid and efficient diesel when properly maintained. The lower power output compared to the 220d places less stress on the turbocharger and drivetrain. The EGR cooler recall is the most important item to verify before purchase. DPF health depends heavily on driving patterns, so a car with documented highway use is preferable. The N47 engine in 2014 cars carries a higher timing chain risk, making 2015+ B47 models strongly recommended. With regular servicing and a mix of urban and highway driving, the 218d can comfortably exceed 200,000 km.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler leak with fire risk (N47 and B47 diesel engines, 2014-2021) Critical - verify completed
Head airbag inflator weld joint failure (2014-2015 models) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2014-2015 models) Verify completed
The EGR cooler recall is the most critical item. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. If the EGR recall has not been done, insist on completion before purchase or factor in the cost of potential intake manifold damage.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all used 218d F22 models
Extended warranty from Nov 2016 (2+1 years) Also expired on all models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on 2014+ models until 2026-2033
All BMW 218d F22 models are outside their original factory warranty. The 12-year rust perforation warranty may still be active on newer cars. Extended warranties are available through BMW dealers and third-party providers.

↔ Also consider

BMW 220d F22 2014-2021 Same platform, higher-power B47 (190 hp). Identical reliability profile but more turbo stress. Same EGR cooler recall applies. Audi A3 1.6 TDI 8V 2012-2020 Similar power output. EA288 diesel is mechanically durable. DQ200 S-tronic is less reliable than BMW's ZF 8-speed if auto-equipped. Mercedes-Benz C220d W205 2014-2021 OM651/OM654 diesel is well-proven. NOx sensor and AdBlue faults on post-2015 models. Timing chain stretch on OM651 is a known concern. BMW M235i F22 2014-2016 Same body, petrol N55 inline-six. No diesel emissions issues but higher fuel costs. N55 is robust with mostly minor gasket leaks. BMW 120d F20 2011-2019 Same N47/B47 engines in a hatchback body. Identical reliability concerns. Hatchback is more practical but lacks the coupe's appeal.
