The 325d slots between the four-cylinder 320d and the full-fat 330d, using the same M57N2 and later N57 inline-six diesel but detuned for a balance of performance and efficiency. It shares the 330d's smooth, high-torque character without the higher insurance and fuel costs. Two engines were fitted: the M57N2 (2006-2010, 197 hp) and the N57 (2010-2012, 204 hp). Both are regarded as durable, high-mileage-capable engines with 300,000+ km examples documented.· more· less

Common Problems
Robust engines with manageable diesel system wear
Both the M57N2 and N57 inline-six engines are widely considered among the best diesel engines BMW has produced, with well-documented examples exceeding 300,000 km. The turbo actuator and oil leaks are the most commonly reported issues, with swirl flap carbon buildup being a concern primarily on M57N2 cars (2006-2010). Unlike the 320d's four-cylinder N47 engine, the 325d's inline-six has no rear-mounted timing chain weakness. Most issues are well-documented, parts are widely available, and independent BMW diesel specialists can handle all common repairs at reasonable cost.

Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI W204
Mercedes-Benz C220 CDI W204 2007-2014
Direct competitor with 4-cylinder diesel. Electronic steering lock failures and rear subframe corrosion are the main concerns. Higher overall risk profile.

Comparable era competitor. Oil pump and camshaft wear are known weak points. Front-wheel-drive platform, different driving character.
BMW 320d E90
BMW 320d E90 2005-2011
