The F25-generation X3 was BMW's compact premium SUV competitor to the Audi Q5 and Volvo XC60. The xDrive28i uses the 2.0-litre N20 turbocharged four-cylinder producing 245 hp, paired with the ZF 8-speed automatic and permanent all-wheel drive. It replaced an earlier naturally aspirated inline-6 in 2012 and was sold alongside the xDrive20d diesel in many markets. The N20 is a capable engine with strong low-end torque, but the timing chain guide issue on pre-2015 cars demands careful buyer scrutiny.· more· less

Buy if: You want a capable petrol SUV with AWD and can find a 2015+ model with revised timing chain components, or a pre-2015 with documented chain replacement.
Avoid if: The car is a pre-2015 build with no evidence of timing chain guide replacement, or has unknown service history with extended oil change intervals.

Common Problems
Production year determines reliability outlook
The BMW X3 F25 xDrive28i's reliability depends heavily on its build date. Pre-2015 cars with the original timing chain guides carry a significant risk of catastrophic engine failure, making documented chain replacement or a thorough pre-purchase inspection essential. Post-2015 cars with revised components are considerably more dependable. Across all years, oil leaks (valve cover, filter housing) are near-certain with age, the steering rack knock is very common but cheaply fixable, and the xDrive transfer case actuator needs watching at higher mileages. With proactive maintenance and shorter oil change intervals than BMW specifies, the N20 can deliver reliable long-term service.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Water pump electrical connector fire risk (2013-2017 models) Critical - verify completed
N20 timing chain extended warranty (7 years / 112,000 km, US settlement; coverage varies in Europe) Verify with VIN
ISOFIX child seat bracket failure (built through April 2016) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (2011-2017 models, multiple rounds) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The water pump connector recall is a fire safety issue and should be confirmed before purchase. The N20 timing chain was subject to an extended warranty and class action settlement in the US. In Europe, BMW offered some goodwill coverage but terms varied by market and dealer. Always ask specifically about timing chain history.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on all used F25 X3 models
Timing chain extended warranty (US: 7 years / 112,000 km) Expired on all models; Europe coverage varied
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014+ models until 2026-2029
All F25 X3 models are now outside their original factory warranty. BMW introduced a 2+1 year warranty from November 2016, but only very late 2017-production F25 models would have benefited. The N20 timing chain extended warranty and class action settlement were primarily US programs. In Europe, BMW offered some goodwill contributions toward chain repairs on a case-by-case basis, but there was no blanket extension. Third-party extended warranties are available but typically exclude pre-existing conditions.
