The flagship electric 5 Series, combining BMW's 5th generation eDrive dual-motor setup with 601 hp and xDrive all-wheel drive on the CLAR platform. The i5 M60 shares its core powertrain technology with the i4, iX, and i7 but adds a front motor and M Performance chassis tuning. WLTP range sits around 455 km, with DC fast charging up to 205 kW. Well-regarded for its blend of performance, comfort, and refinement, it competes directly with the Porsche Taycan 4S and Mercedes EQE.· more· less

Common Problems
Solid electric drivetrain, but recall-heavy and software-dependent
The i5 M60's Gen5 eDrive powertrain is fundamentally robust, with no widespread reports of motor or inverter failures. Battery degradation data from the shared platform is encouraging, and the 8-year / 160,000 km battery warranty covers the most expensive component. However, BMW has issued an unusually high number of recalls for a car this new: integrated brake system, steering spindle, drive unit software, pedestrian warning, steering wheel sensor, and A/C wiring harness. Most are addressed free of charge, but a used buyer must verify every recall has been completed. Outside of recalls, the main ongoing concerns are the heat changeover valve leak (shared across BMW EVs), 12V battery management, software stability, and the high cost of staggered tire replacement. The core drivetrain appears reliable for a performance EV.

Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, 3 years from Nov 2016 with BMW 2+1) May still apply on 2024+ models. Check registration date.
High-voltage battery warranty 8 years / 160,000 km with 70% capacity guarantee
Electric drivetrain warranty 8 years / 160,000 km (motor, inverter, reducer)
Rust perforation warranty 12 years
Early 2024 i5 M60 models may still be within the 3-year BMW factory warranty (2+1 program, requires first service at a BMW dealer within 2 years). The 8-year / 160,000 km HV battery and drivetrain warranty provides substantial protection for the most expensive components. Recall work is always free regardless of warranty status.
