Six-cylinder G42 coupe with the B58 turbocharged 3.0-litre and standard xDrive all-wheel drive, paired exclusively to the ZF 8HP automatic. Sits below the G87 M2 in the line-up but shares the same CLAR platform underpinnings. The B58 is well-proven across the BMW range, and the M240i is still young enough that long-term wear patterns are only just emerging.· more· less

Common Problems
Solid reliability profile, but verify all recalls
The G42 M240i benefits from the well-proven B58 engine and the dependable ZF 8HP automatic. Most known weak points (OFHG, PCV, VANOS) are shared with older B58 cars and typically appear after 80,000 km, so current G42 examples are mostly too young to show them yet. The bigger near-term concern is the cluster of early recalls — particularly the 2024 steering gear recall — which must be verified completed before purchase. iDrive 8 has had software teething issues that are largely resolved by updates.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins

ECU allows windows/sunroof to close after digital key removed (2023 M240i xDrive) Verify completed

PCV valve cover warranty extension (SIB 01 14 23) — 15 years/240,000 km Check eligibility with BMW dealer
Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The 2024 steering gear recall is particularly important and must be confirmed before purchase. The PCV warranty extension covers the most common B58 wear item and applies to most G42 cars.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years, no km limit) Active on most G42 cars until 2025-2027
PCV valve cover extended warranty 15 years / 240,000 km from first registration
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all G42 cars
Most G42 M240i examples are still within their original 3-year factory warranty (from November 2016 BMW extended to 3 years). The PCV valve cover warranty extension covers the most common B58 wear item for 15 years/240,000 km. Verify both with a BMW dealer using the VIN.
