The E82 is the two-door coupe version of BMW's first 1 Series, sharing its platform and mechanicals with the E87 hatchback but offering a more stylish body and a slightly more focused feel. The 120d is the mid-range diesel with 177 hp and 350 Nm driving the rear wheels, a rare combination in this segment. It is engaging to drive and reasonably efficient, but it uses the well-documented N47D20 engine with its rear-mounted timing chain. With attentive oil-change intervals, many reach high mileage, though the chain remains the defining long-term risk.

EGR cooler fire risk recall
Buy if: You want a practical rear-wheel-drive diesel coupe with documented short oil change intervals, completed EGR recall, and no cold-start rattle.
Avoid if: The car has cold-start chain rattle, unknown service history, or was used mostly for short urban trips that clog the DPF.

Common Problems
Rear-mounted timing chain stretches, causing cold-start rattle and risking catastrophic engine damage · more· less
The N47 engine places its timing chain at the rear of the block, between the engine and gearbox. Factory chain, guides and tensioner are prone to premature wear, aggravated by an overly sharp-edged crankshaft sprocket. Vehicles built between March 2007 and January 2009 are most severely affected, though the issue continues into later production. Revised parts in 2009 and 2011 reduced but did not eliminate failures. The warning sign is a metallic rattle on cold start that lasts 1-30 seconds. Once audible, the chain has already stretched significantly. Replacement requires gearbox removal and costs roughly €1,500-2,750 at an independent specialist in Western Europe. If the chain snaps it causes valve-piston contact and engine damage, with replacement running €3,500-7,000 fitted. Mitigation: change oil every 10,000 km using quality 5W-30, not BMW's 25,000 km long-life interval.
EGR cooler can leak coolant which combines with soot at high temperatures, creating a fire risk · more· less
BMW issued a major worldwide recall covering around 800,000 diesels, including all N47-powered 120d E82 models, after EGR coolers were found to leak coolant that can combine with soot deposits and melt the intake manifold, with a small number of fires reported. BMW has acknowledged that early recall repairs were not always sufficient, and an optimised cooler from a different supplier has only been fitted since 2022. At a BMW dealer the recall repair is free. If the work still has to be done on a privately purchased car, replacement of the cooler and valve at an independent workshop runs approximately €600-1,500. The recall status must be verified before purchase via the VIN.
Plastic swirl flaps in the intake manifold become brittle and can break into the engine · more· less
The N47 intake manifold contains plastic swirl flaps that regulate airflow. Heat cycling and vibration make them brittle over time. Flaps or their mounting clips can break off and be pulled into the cylinders, damaging pistons, valves and potentially the turbo on the way out. Preventive blanking with aluminium plates is cheap insurance: around €20-40 for parts and one hour labour (€100-150 total). If fragments reach the combustion chamber, cylinder head repair costs roughly €2,000-3,000, and a complete replacement engine from BMW can reach €8,500-13,500 fitted. Risk rises noticeably beyond 150,000 km. Many specialists now recommend blanking on any N47 that still has original flaps.
Diesel particulate filter blocks on cars driven primarily in urban traffic · more· less
The 120d E82 needs sustained driving above about 60 km/h to complete DPF regeneration. Short, cold urban trips cause soot to accumulate faster than it can be burned off, leading to interrupted regenerations, power loss, warning lights and higher fuel consumption. Professional DPF cleaning costs €200-350. Ash-saturated filters may need back-flushing at €400-600, or replacement at €1,000-1,800. Checking soot loading with a diagnostic tool before purchase is strongly recommended. Cars with regular motorway use rarely have this problem.
Electronic wastegate actuator sticks from carbon buildup, causing limp mode and power loss · more· less
The N47 uses an electronically controlled wastegate actuator. Carbon build-up, a weak spring and infrequent high-load use can cause the mechanism to stick, producing EPC warning lights, limp mode and noticeable loss of performance. BMW does not sell the actuator separately, so a dealer quote generally covers the full turbocharger at €1,500-2,500 fitted. Specialist repair of the actuator alone is typically €400-600. The 120d's higher output makes the turbo work slightly harder than the 118d's, though failure rates are broadly similar.
DMF springs weaken, causing judder on take-off and rattling at idle · more· less
Manual 120d models develop clutch judder when pulling away, particularly on inclines and when cold. The dual mass flywheel wears and develops excess play, causing vibration through the pedal and a rattle at idle that disappears when the clutch is depressed. The 120d's 350 Nm puts more stress on the DMF than lower-output 1 Series diesels. Combined clutch and DMF replacement at an independent specialist costs around €800-1,500, with roughly 6.5 hours of labour. Wear typically becomes noticeable between 80,000-130,000 km, earlier on heavily used urban cars.
Rear subframe corrodes on exposed edges, potentially compromising structural integrity · more· less
The E82 shares the E87's rear subframe, which is vulnerable to corrosion on its lower edges where stone chips, salt and wheel spray concentrate. Coastal areas and regions using road salt accelerate the problem. Severely corroded subframes have been reported to crack, damaging brake lines. Finding a rust-free used replacement is increasingly difficult. Preventive treatment by wire-brushing surface rust and applying wax-based rust inhibitor every two years costs €50-100. Professional sandblasting and coating runs €300-500. A full replacement subframe fitted costs €800-1,500.
Water enters boot through vents and light seals, soaking the PDC module and causing electrical faults · more· less
On the E82 coupe water can enter the boot through rear vent panels behind the trim and through poorly sealed tail-light housings, collecting around the PDC (parking distance control) module on the right side. A waterlogged PDC module injects corrupted signals onto the CAN bus, causing symptoms from random warning lights to complete instrument cluster failure. DIY fix: reseal vents and light housings (around €10-20 in sealant) and drill a small drain hole below the module. If the module itself is corroded, replacement costs €150-300. If other modules have been affected by CAN bus interference, diagnosis and repair can reach €500.
N47 timing chain is a serious concern requiring vigilant maintenance
The BMW 120d E82 can deliver solid service if oil is changed every 10,000 km and the known weak points are addressed proactively. The timing chain is the defining risk: 2007-2009 cars are most vulnerable, but every N47 needs attention. Preventive swirl flap blanking is cheap insurance against catastrophic damage, and the EGR cooler recall must be verified. Beyond the engine, the E82 shares the E87's aging issues like rear subframe corrosion and boot water ingress. A well-kept car with documented maintenance, no cold-start rattle and completed recall work can still be a rewarding rear-wheel-drive coupe.

The EGR cooler recall is the most critical item. BMW recalled roughly 800,000 diesel vehicles worldwide for this fire safety issue and has acknowledged that earlier repair attempts were not always sufficient. Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. Do not purchase an N47-powered car without confirming the EGR cooler recall status.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years)
Expired on all E82 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years)
Expired on all E82 models
All BMW 120d E82 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty and 12-year rust perforation warranty. No factory extended warranty programs remain available from BMW for this generation. Third-party warranty providers may offer coverage but typically exclude known problem areas like timing chains and turbochargers on N47 engines.
