The E60 generation 5 Series brought a bold design and a significant technology leap for BMW. The 525d with its 2.5-litre M57 inline-six turbodiesel is widely regarded as one of the stronger engines in the E60 range, offering a good balance between performance and economy. Well-maintained examples regularly exceed 300,000 km. The main ownership concerns are swirl flap integrity, DPF health on short-trip cars, and the ZF automatic gearbox needing regular fluid changes that BMW originally labelled as unnecessary.· more· less

Robust M57 inline-six diesel Strong motorway cruiser, low fuel use
Swirl flap failure risk (engine) Complex electronics age poorly
Buy if: You want a comfortable diesel cruiser with a strong engine and can verify the swirl flaps have been addressed and the gearbox has been serviced.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and turbo issues) or cannot trace the service history for gearbox and cooling system work.

Common Problems
Robust engine, but age-related complexity requires diligent maintenance
The M57 inline-six is one of BMW's most respected diesel engines and many examples exceed 300,000 km. However, by 2026 all E60s are 16-23 years old, meaning age-related failures in electronics, seals, and emissions equipment are increasingly common. The swirl flap issue is the most serious concern, as it can cause catastrophic engine damage if not addressed preventively. Cars with regular fluid changes to the ZF automatic and documented service history are significantly less risky. Prioritise examples where the swirl flaps have been blanked or replaced, the DPF is healthy, and the gearbox fluid has been changed.

Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Battery cable connection fire risk (2004-2010 production) Verify completed
Diesel fuel filter heater short circuit / fire risk (Aug 2008 - Nov 2009 diesel production) Verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (selected 2003-2010 models) Verify with VIN
VANOS adjustment unit bolts (2009-2010 models with applicable engines) Verify if applicable
Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The battery cable recall is particularly important as it can cause a fire even when the car is parked and switched off.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E60 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Expired on all but final 2010 production
All BMW E60 525d models are well outside their original factory warranty. Third-party used car warranties are available but often exclude known diesel-specific components like the DPF and turbocharger. Budget for repairs as out-of-pocket expenses.

Mercedes-Benz E220 CDI W211
Mercedes-Benz E220 CDI W211 2002-2009
Main competitor. OM646 engine is reliable but has injector seal leaks. Rust can be worse on early W211s. Generally similar overall running costs.
Audi A6 2.7 TDI C6
Audi A6 2.7 TDI C6 2004-2011
Similar segment rival. Known for DPF problems and cam chain wear. Running costs are comparable but Audi parts tend to be slightly more expensive.
BMW 520d F10
BMW 520d F10 2010-2017
Successor generation with newer N47/B47 engine. More refined but the N47 has a known timing chain problem. F10 electronics are more modern and reliable.
Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI B6
Volkswagen Passat 2.0 TDI B6 2005-2010
Budget alternative in the same era. Simpler electronics, cheaper parts. DPF and dual-mass flywheel are the main concerns. Significantly lower running costs.
