2017-2023 · 2.0L B47D20 (190 hp) 4-cylinder turbocharged diesel

The G30 generation brought the 5 Series onto BMW's CLAR platform, offering a significant reduction in weight and a noticeable improvement in refinement over the F10. The 520d pairs the B47D20 four-cylinder turbodiesel with the widely praised ZF 8HP automatic, producing 190 hp and 400 Nm. It remains one of Europe's most popular executive diesel sedans, favored by long-distance commuters and fleet operators for its combination of motorway comfort and fuel economy around 5 l/100 km. A facelift (LCI) arrived in mid-2020 with updated technology and mild-hybrid assistance on xDrive models.

Proven B47 diesel, strong economy Excellent ZF 8HP automatic
EGR cooler recall (fire risk) Complex diesel emissions system
Buy if: You cover regular motorway distances, can verify all recalls completed, and the car has a documented service history with quality oil.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips under 15 km (DPF and AdBlue problems) or want the lowest possible maintenance costs.

Common Problems
Reliable diesel, but emissions hardware and recalls need attention
The B47D20 in the G30 is a proven and generally robust four-cylinder diesel, with many owners reporting trouble-free running well beyond 150,000 km. The timing chain was relocated to the front, resolving the N47's worst weakness. The ZF 8HP automatic is one of the most dependable transmissions available. Main ownership risks center on the diesel emissions equipment (EGR cooler recall, DPF, AdBlue system) and the cooling system rather than the engine's core mechanics. Two significant recalls (EGR cooler and starter motor) must be verified before purchase. Cars with regular motorway use and documented service history are significantly lower-risk.
Pre-Purchase Inspection Checklist
General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler leak with fire risk (B47 diesel, production dates expanded 2018-2024) Critical - verify completed
Starter motor overheating / fire risk (2017-2022 G30 models, recall 2025) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator replacement (selected production periods) Verify completed
Contact a BMW dealer with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is the most critical safety item and has been expanded several times between 2018 and 2024. Even if a previous repair was performed, BMW may have since extended the recall scope. The starter motor recall is a newer campaign from 2025 affecting certain 2017-2022 models.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years from Nov 2016) Expired on most used G30 520d models
EGR cooler extended warranty 15 years from first registration
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on 2017+ models until 2029+
Extended warranty availability Available through BMW dealers and third-party providers
BMW introduced a 2+1 year warranty (3 years total, no km limit) from November 2016, covering all G30 models. Most used G30 520d models from 2017-2020 are now outside this warranty. LCI models from late 2020 onwards may still have some coverage depending on purchase date. The EGR cooler has a separate 15-year extended warranty due to the fire risk recall. The 12-year rust perforation warranty remains active on all G30 models.
