The fourth-generation X5 is widely regarded as one of BMW's finest SUVs, and the xDrive30d pairs the refined B57 inline-six turbodiesel with the proven ZF 8HP automatic and xDrive all-wheel drive. It delivers effortless motorway cruising with 6-8 l/100 km economy, strong towing ability, and a comfortable ride. The B57 is considered one of BMW's most reliable modern diesel engines, with many examples comfortably surpassing 300,000 km. However, the surrounding systems — transfer case, optional air suspension, and SCR/AdBlue exhaust treatment — require attention and can generate significant repair bills if neglected.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable engine let down by complex ancillaries
The B57 diesel engine itself is robust and can comfortably exceed 300,000 km with proper maintenance. However, the supporting systems — particularly the xDrive transfer case, optional air suspension, and SCR/AdBlue exhaust treatment — require monitoring and can generate significant repair bills. Early transfer case fluid changes and regular motorway driving to keep the DPF healthy are the most effective preventive measures. Post-2022 models benefit from the updated EGR cooler design.
