The third-generation X1 moved to the FAAR platform (successor to UKL2) and grew significantly in every dimension, becoming a genuine family crossover. The sDrive18i is the entry-level petrol variant, pairing the B38 three-cylinder turbo with a 7-speed Getrag dual-clutch gearbox and front-wheel drive. BMW's iDrive 8 with the curved display brings the X1's interior into line with higher-end models.

Common Problems
7-speed dual-clutch gearbox hesitates and jerks at low speeds, particularly from standstill and in stop-and-go traffic · more· less
The Getrag 7-speed DCT in the U11 X1 has attracted significant criticism for its low-speed behaviour. Owners report delays of several seconds when moving off from standstill, jerky 1st-to-2nd gear transitions, and unsmooth creeping in traffic. A class-action lawsuit in the US alleges the gearbox can take up to 7 seconds to respond, creating rollaway risk. European models with the 48V mild hybrid system (sDrive20i and above) reportedly experience this less severely because the electric motor smooths out low-speed gaps. The base sDrive18i does not have mild hybrid assistance, making it more susceptible. BMW has released multiple software updates that improve shift quality, particularly after break-in. Switching to Sport mode largely eliminates the hesitation. If the issue progresses beyond software calibration to clutch pack or mechatronic failure, repair costs range from 1,500 to 2,000 euros, though this is uncommon on such new cars. A gearbox fluid change at 60,000-70,000 km (200-300 euros) is recommended despite BMW claiming lifetime fill.
Wastegate actuator rattles at low RPM, especially in Comfort and Eco Pro modes during gentle driving · more· less
This is a well-documented B38 issue that carries over to the U11 generation. The wastegate actuator develops play and rattles at low engine speeds during gentle acceleration. BMW has this documented in their PUMA diagnostic system and developed an updated fix around Q3 2022, so later production U11 cars may have improved components. The actuator alone costs around 300-500 euros to replace at a specialist. If turbo internals are damaged, a full turbo replacement runs 1,000-1,500 euros. Regular spirited driving and avoiding exclusively gentle low-RPM use helps prevent carbon buildup on the mechanism. Many owners learn to live with the rattle as it does not typically affect performance.
Curved display occasionally freezes, goes blank, or reboots mid-drive, temporarily losing navigation and climate controls · more· less
The U11 features BMW's iDrive 8 with a curved display combining a 10.25-inch instrument cluster and a 10.7-inch infotainment screen. Some owners report the display going black during driving, losing navigation, phone connectivity, and in some cases climate control access. BMW has released multiple over-the-air updates to improve stability, and early 2022-2023 production cars are more affected. In most cases, a forced restart resolves the issue. Persistent problems may require a head unit replacement at 300-400 euros out of warranty. Apple CarPlay connectivity has also been reported as buggy on early software versions. Later production cars with updated software are significantly more stable.
Electric water pump or electronic thermostat fails, typically between 80,000 and 130,000 km · more· less
The B38 uses an electric water pump integrated with an electronic thermostat housing, which is a known wear item on modern BMW engines. Symptoms include coolant warning lights, erratic temperature readings, or poor cabin heating. A single overheating event can warp the aluminium cylinder head. BMW recommends replacing both the water pump and thermostat together since they are interconnected. Parts cost 250-400 euros, with labour adding 250-600 euros depending on the shop. Given the U11's youth, this issue has not yet widely manifested, but it is a well-documented B38 weak point from older applications and should be monitored as mileage accumulates.
Chain stretches and tensioner weakens over time, causing cold-start rattle typically after 100,000 km · more· less
The B38 timing chain sits at the rear of the engine, making replacement labour-intensive. Over time, the chain stretches and the tensioner's check valve weakens, allowing oil pressure to bleed off overnight. This produces a distinctive rattle lasting 1-30 seconds on cold start. On earlier B38 applications (F40, F48), this typically appears between 80,000 and 130,000 km. BMW has improved tensioner components in later production, and the U11's more recent B38 iteration likely benefits from these revisions. Very few U11s have reached the mileage where this becomes relevant, so the risk is low at present. Independent specialist replacement costs 1,200-1,800 euros; BMW dealers quote 2,000-2,500 euros.
Continental brake module may lose power-assist function, extending stopping distances and disabling ABS/DSC · more· less
BMW issued multiple recalls (24V-104, 24V-697, 24V-739) covering 2023-2025 X1 models equipped with the Continental integrated brake module. The servo motor welds can break, causing loss of power brake assist and ABS/DSC function. A dashboard warning light appears, but stopping distances increase significantly. The remedy is a free brake module replacement at the dealer. This affects a wide range of BMW models, not just the X1. As this is a safety recall, repairs are performed at no cost. Verify with BMW using the VIN whether the recall applies and has been completed. Some owners report multiple recalls for the same system, as earlier replacement parts also proved defective.
Direct injection allows carbon deposits on intake valves, worse with short trips and gentle driving · more· less
Like all direct-injection petrol engines, the B38 can accumulate carbon on intake valves over time. However, BMW improved the PCV separator system in the B-series engines, which reduces oil vapour reaching the intake compared to older N-series engines. The issue is more pronounced in cars driven primarily on short urban trips. Walnut blasting is the standard cleaning method, costing 400-700 euros at a specialist. On the U11, this is unlikely to be relevant before 80,000-100,000 km with normal driving patterns. Using quality fuel and occasional extended highway drives help slow the buildup.
Very new model with teething issues rather than fundamental flaws
The U11 X1 sDrive18i is too new for comprehensive long-term reliability data. The B38 engine is well-proven from earlier applications and shows no new concerning failure modes. The main ownership frustration is the 7-speed DCT's low-speed behaviour, which is more of a drivability nuisance than a mechanical reliability issue. The integrated brake module recall is the most safety-critical item and must be verified as completed. Known B38 weak points (cooling system, timing chain tensioner, wastegate rattle) are established and predictable, typically appearing at higher mileages than most U11s have reached. Software stability has improved significantly with updates.

Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The integrated brake module recall is the most safety-critical item and has been expanded multiple times through 2024. The airbag recall also requires verification on early production cars. BMW has issued multiple recall campaigns for the brake system, so even if one was completed, check whether subsequent campaigns also apply.
