BMW X1 sDrive18i U11

2022-presentLast reviewed: May 2026 · How this report is builtMay 2026

2022-present · 1.5L B38 3-cylinder turbocharged petrol (136 hp)

The third-generation X1 moved to the FAAR platform (successor to UKL2) and grew significantly in every dimension, becoming a genuine family crossover. The sDrive18i is the entry-level petrol variant, pairing the B38 three-cylinder turbo with a 7-speed Getrag dual-clutch gearbox and front-wheel drive. BMW's iDrive 8 with the curved display brings the X1's interior into line with higher-end models.

Efficient B38 engine, proven design Modern iDrive 8 with curved display
DCT gearbox hesitation at low speeds Very new, limited long-term data
Buy if: You want a spacious premium compact SUV with low fuel costs and can live with a dual-clutch gearbox that requires adaptation to its low-speed manners.
Avoid if: You do mostly stop-and-go city driving (DCT frustration) or need long-term reliability data before committing.

Common Problems
Very new model with teething issues rather than fundamental flaws
The U11 X1 sDrive18i is too new for comprehensive long-term reliability data. The B38 engine is well-proven from earlier applications and shows no new concerning failure modes. The main ownership frustration is the 7-speed DCT's low-speed behaviour, which is more of a drivability nuisance than a mechanical reliability issue. The integrated brake module recall is the most safety-critical item and must be verified as completed. Known B38 weak points (cooling system, timing chain tensioner, wastegate rattle) are established and predictable, typically appearing at higher mileages than most U11s have reached. Software stability has improved significantly with updates.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Integrated brake module servo motor welds may break, causing loss of power brake assist and ABS/DSC (production Aug 2022 - Oct 2023, multiple campaigns 24V-104/697/739) Critical - verify completed
Driver airbag may not deploy correctly due to manufacturing defect by Joyson Safety Systems (selected 2022-2023 production) Critical - verify completed
Second-row outboard seat belts pinched by interior trim panel during assembly (selected 2023 production) Verify completed
Rear light gap dimension rework (selected U11 production) Verify completed
B-pillar reinforcement plate structural strength insufficient (selected 2025 production, Sep-Oct 2024 build dates) Verify completed if applicable
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The integrated brake module recall is the most safety-critical item and has been expanded multiple times through 2024. The airbag recall also requires verification on early production cars. BMW has issued multiple recall campaigns for the brake system, so even if one was completed, check whether subsequent campaigns also apply.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (3 years, 2+1 from Nov 2016) Active on 2023+ cars, expired on early 2022 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all U11 models
Extended warranty (BMW Extended Warranty) Available through BMW dealers, 1-2 year extensions
BMW's 2+1 year factory warranty (3 years total, no km limit) applies to all EU-delivered U11 models. Early 2022 production cars may be outside warranty, but 2023 and 2024 models likely still have coverage remaining. Verify remaining warranty with BMW using the VIN before purchase. The 12-year rust perforation warranty is active on all U11 examples.

BMW X1 F48 sDrive18i 2015-2022 Previous generation with same B38 engine. Known suspension control arm issues and Aisin auto gearbox problems. The U11's DCT is a different concern entirely. Volkswagen T-Roc 1.5 TSI 2017-present MQB platform competitor. Cold-start judder on early cars and DQ200 DSG concerns. Similar overall risk profile at lower purchase price. Volvo XC40 T3 1.5 2018-2022 Premium compact SUV with Volvo's own three-cylinder. Manual models have crankshaft thrust bearing defect. Sensus infotainment also problematic. BMW 118i F40 2019-2024 Same B38 engine on the older UKL2 platform. Identical engine concerns. The F40 uses the same Getrag DCT and has similar low-speed hesitation reports. Audi Q2 1.4 TFSI 2016-2019 Smaller premium crossover with EA211 engine. Water pump and DQ200 S tronic are its main weak points. Lower purchase price but older technology.
