The G05 X5 is BMW's fourth-generation luxury mid-size SUV, widely regarded as one of the best all-rounders in its class. The xDrive40i pairs the proven B58 3.0-litre turbocharged inline-six with the smooth ZF 8HP automatic and permanent all-wheel drive. It combines strong straight-line performance with refined highway cruising and reasonable fuel economy for a car of its size. The B58 engine has an excellent reputation across the BMW range and is considered one of the brand's most reliable modern powerplants.· more· less

Common Problems
Reliable engine in a complex vehicle, budget for ancillaries
The B58 inline-six is widely considered one of BMW's most reliable modern engines, with many examples exceeding 200,000 km without major powertrain issues. The ZF 8HP automatic is equally well-regarded. The main ownership risks come from surrounding systems rather than the core powertrain: the transfer case shudder is the most widely reported issue and has prompted both a class-action lawsuit and a BMW service bulletin. Coolant system components degrade with age, and the AC evaporator is a known expensive failure on this platform. Cars with standard steel springs have significantly lower risk profiles than those with air suspension.

Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
Starter motor overheating risk (2019-2020 xDrive40i) Verify completed
Starter motor replacement (certain 2024-2025 models) Verify completed
Integrated brake system malfunction (2024 models) Verify if applicable
Panoramic sunroof closing without key fob present (2019-2022) Verify completed
Rearview camera display obscured (2019-2021) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The starter motor recall is particularly important for 2019-2020 models. BMW also issued a Technical Service Bulletin (SIB 27 02 20) for transfer case shudder, which is not a formal recall but should be addressed.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years, from Nov 2016: 3 years with 2+1) Expired on 2019-2022 models, may remain on 2024+ cars
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) Active on all G05 models
BMW extended warranty Available through BMW dealers, pricing varies by age and mileage
BMW introduced the 2+1 warranty programme in November 2016, extending the standard 2-year warranty to 3 years on vehicles serviced at authorised BMW dealers. Verify whether the specific car qualifies. All pre-2023 G05 models are outside their original factory warranty. Consider an extended warranty for cars with air suspension.
