No warning lights appear when damage occurs. The B58 engine uses a partially plastic thermostat housing and an electric water pump that become brittle with thermal cycling. Symptoms include low coolant warnings, sweet smell from the engine bay, or visible puddles of blue/green coolant under the car. Many specialists recommend replacing the water pump and thermostat housing together during a major service even if no leak is present, as the access is similar and failure risk increases with age. A known issue across the G05 platform (X5, X6, X7) affecting vehicles as early as 50,000-80,000 km. The root cause is suspected corrosion from the newer R-1234yf refrigerant attacking the evaporator core. The B58 valve cover integrates the PCV (Positive Crankcase Ventilation) system. While the valve cover gasket itself is inexpensive (under €50), the integrated PCV design means the complete valve cover assembly often needs replacement. BMW issued a recall affecting approximately 68,000 X5 vehicles from 2019-2020, plus a separate recall for some 2024-2025 models. The engine starter in certain production configurations could become electrically overloaded during repeated cranking attempts, creating a potential fire risk.
