A rear-wheel-drive compact coupe built on the CLAR platform, sharing its mechanical underpinnings with the 3 Series and 4 Series. The 220i uses the proven B48 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbo petrol engine paired exclusively with the ZF 8-speed automatic. It offers a good balance of comfort and driving engagement, though it sits in a shrinking segment as BMW has signalled no direct ICE successor.· more· less

Common Problems
Proven engine on a modern platform, but cooling system needs watching
The BMW 220i G42 benefits from the well-understood B48 engine and the reliable ZF 8-speed gearbox. The engine internals and timing chain are robust, and high-mileage examples of the B48 platform exist without major powertrain concerns. The main risk area is the cooling system, where plastic components (oil filter housing, coolant vent line, thermostat housing) are known to degrade with heat exposure and mileage. Proactive inspection and replacement of these components at around 80,000-100,000 km can prevent cascading failures. The starter motor recall should be verified as completed on any used example.
