The range-topping diesel in the E84 X1 lineup. The xDrive25d pairs a twin-turbocharged version of the N47 2.0-litre four-cylinder with permanent all-wheel drive, producing 218 hp and 450 Nm. It was introduced with the 2012 facelift and shares the rear-drive-based E90 3 Series platform. Performance is brisk (0-100 km/h in 6.8 seconds) with fuel economy around 5.5-6.5 l/100 km. Parts availability is excellent thanks to shared components across the 1, 3, and 5 Series.· more· less

Buy if: You want a fast compact diesel SUV with AWD and can find one with documented short oil change intervals and no cold-start timing chain rattle.
Avoid if: You mostly drive short urban trips (DPF and EGR clogging), the car shows cold-start rattle, or you need the lowest possible maintenance costs.

Common Problems
More complex than the 20d, but manageable with diligent maintenance
The xDrive25d combines the N47 timing chain concern with a twin-turbo system and the xDrive transfer case, making it the most mechanically complex E84 variant. The N47TU revision used in these 2012-2015 cars has improved chain components over earlier N47 engines, and many examples exceed 150,000 km without major issues when maintained with short oil change intervals. The twin-turbo setup is the key differentiator from the xDrive20d: it adds performance but also adds cost when turbos need attention. Cars with documented 10,000 km oil changes, regular motorway use, and completed EGR recall work are the best prospects.

General checks
Specific for this vehicle
Recalls and Technical Service Bulletins
EGR cooler potential fire risk (N47 diesel, various production dates 2012-2015) Critical - verify completed
Takata airbag inflator (2012-2015 models) Verify completed
Brake vacuum pump seal (certain 2012-2015 models) Verify completed
Battery positive cable connector (certain 2012-2013 production) Verify completed
Contact BMW with the VIN to verify all recalls have been completed. The EGR cooler recall is particularly critical as it addresses a potential fire risk and has been expanded multiple times. BMW acknowledged that earlier corrective measures were inadequate, and the latest updated cooler should be fitted.
Warranty Status
Factory warranty (2 years) Expired on all E84 models
Rust perforation warranty (12 years) May still apply on 2014-2015 models
EGR cooler recall Free repair regardless of age or mileage
All E84 X1 models are well outside their original 2-year factory warranty. BMW offered a 2+1 warranty extension from November 2016, but this does not apply retroactively to E84 production. The EGR cooler recall repair is free at any BMW dealer regardless of warranty status.
