The B48 engine uses a polycarbonate oil filter housing that becomes brittle through repeated heat cycling. The internal gasket can also deteriorate, creating external coolant leaks or, in worse cases, allowing coolant to mix with engine oil. BMW issued Service Information Bulletin SIB 11 10 25 acknowledging that the gasket can deform the housing insert. A US class-action lawsuit (2026) specifically names the B46/B48/B58 engines for premature oil filter housing failure. Repair typically involves replacing the entire housing and gasket assembly. Independent shop cost runs around €800 to €1,200, while BMW dealers charge €1,500 to €2,500. Failures most commonly appear between 80,000 and 130,000 km.

The cylinder head coolant vent line is made of plastic that cannot withstand sustained high temperatures. The quick-disconnect coupling is the typical failure point, causing a rapid coolant leak. BMW issued Service Action SIB 17 01 21 covering affected F30/F32/F22 chassis vehicles. If diagnosed as this specific line, BMW dealers should replace it at no charge under the service action. However, not all dealers honour this consistently on older cars, and if the service action has expired, independent repair costs are around €200 to €400 for parts and labour. A separate class-action lawsuit (2023) also targets this defect on 2017-2021 vehicles with the B48 engine.

The rubber valve cover gasket deteriorates over time due to constant heat cycling. Oil seeps past the gasket and can drip onto the exhaust manifold, creating a burning smell and potential fire hazard if left unchecked. On the B48, valve cover replacement is more involved than on older BMW engines because the fuel injectors and high-pressure fuel line must be removed first, requiring special tools. Typical failure occurs between 100,000 and 150,000 km. Parts are relatively cheap (around €30 for the gasket), but labour drives the cost. Independent shops charge around €600 to €800; BMW dealers quote €900 to €1,200.

The B48 uses an electric water pump that can fail suddenly. When it does, the engine can overheat in just a few minutes because there is no mechanical backup. Warning signs are minimal: a temperature warning on the dashboard is often the first indication. Failures typically occur between 100,000 and 150,000 km. BMW recommends replacing the water pump and thermostat together, as they are in the same area and often fail around the same time. Combined replacement at an independent shop costs €700 to €1,000; at a BMW dealer, expect €1,200 to €1,400.

Like all direct-injection engines, the B48 does not spray fuel across the intake valves, allowing carbon deposits to build up over time. This gradually reduces airflow and can cause rough idle, hesitation, and reduced power. The B48 is less severely affected than the older N20, but cars used primarily for short urban trips accumulate carbon faster. Walnut blasting is the standard cleaning method. Independent specialists charge €350 to €500 for the service; BMW dealers charge €500 to €600. Most specialists recommend cleaning every 60,000 to 80,000 km for cars driven in mixed conditions.

The F32 shares its electric power steering rack with the F30 3 Series. Some units develop excessive play between the internal gear components and the EPS motor, resulting in a noticeable knock or clunk when turning the wheel at low speeds. BMW has not issued a formal recall for this issue. Complete replacement with a new rack costs €2,000 to €2,200 at dealers. Rebuilt units are available for €1,200 to €1,600 installed. Repair kits also exist for around €300 to €500, though fitment requires removing the rack. This issue affects a small percentage of cars and tends to appear on higher-mileage examples over 120,000 km.
